When will ‘Supergirl’ be available to stream on HBO Max?
The movie is in theaters now, but see our prediction for when it will stream at home below.
Warner Bros.’s DC Studios is moving at the rate of a speeding bullet. The newest film from the studio is “Supergirl,” and it officially soars into theaters on Friday, June 26. The movie will bring Milly Alcock back to the role of Kara Zor-El — a.k.a. Supergirl — but when will it be available to stream at home? We’ll give our best prediction below!
Key Details:
- See it now: The new trailer for “Supergirl” has been released.
- Complications?: Barring unforeseen snags caused by Paramount’s takeover of WBD, the movie will stream on HBO Max.
- Not too long: A theatrical window of less than 100 days seems likely.
In “Supergirl,” fans pick back up with Kara Zor-El as she cruises the universe on her 23rd birthday. She doesn’t feel terribly connected to Earth or anywhere else, having escaped Krypton before its destruction; as long as she’s got her dog Krypto with her, she’s home. But when Krypto is poisoned by a nefarious villain, Kara’s wanderings become an all-out quest for vengeance that no one dares interfere with.
The film has received mixed reviews from the critics, with it earning a rotten 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 50% on the usually even more hard-to-please Metacritic. Thw general consensus is that while Alcock shines in the role of Kara Zor-El, the film it self is a little too shaggy and meandering to have much of an emotional punch. The addition of Jason Momoa as the antihero Lobo to the cast feels a bit forced for many of the critics.
With Momoa playing Lobo, the actor returns to the DC universe after a stint as Aquaman in the Snyder-verse. Additionally, Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll, and David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman in the film.

When will ‘Supergirl’ be streaming at home?
Normally, since Warner Bros. Discovery is distributing “Supergirl,” it would be easy to say where the movie will stream once it’s ready to move on from theaters. HBO Max would be the obvious destination, but there is a new wrinkle to consider — an impending takeover by Paramount.
Paramount has already promised that it will merge HBO Max and Paramount+, but has also promised to keep HBO “independent.” What that probably means is that HBO Max will still exist as a distinct streaming plan within the Paramount+ app, so “Supergirl” will end up there once it’s ready to stream.
How long will that take? I plan to use the film’s 2025 companion movie “Superman” as a guide. When that film was first released, I thought WBD would more or less insist on keeping it in theaters for more than 100 days. Instead, despite the movie’s box-office success, it was available on HBO Max 70 days after arriving in theaters.
I’ll go with a slightly longer window for “Supergirl,” but I still think the movie will come to streaming no more than 80 days after its initial release. If my prediction proves accurate, the movie will be available on HBO Max (and maybe Paramount+, too) on Friday, Sept. 11, a full 77 days after first bowing in theaters.
