Taylor Sheridan leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal
Taylor Sheridan leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal
Sheridan has signed a new TV and film development deal with NBCU, though there’s still time for him to wrap up shows like ‘Tulsa King.’
Paramount Skydance may be in acquisition mode at the moment, but it looks primed to lose one of its most valuable assets. Writer, producer, director, and occasional actor Taylor Sheridan has been churning out content that audiences have devoured for Paramount since 2021, but the gravy train is ending for the studio before the decade is out. Sheridan is moving to NBCUniversal starting in 2029.
Key Details:
- So long, Sheridan: Sheridan is signing what’s believed to be a rich development deal with NBCU.
- Saw it coming?: In August, Paramount announced it had signed a new overall deal with the Duffer brothers of Netflix fame.
- Still plenty coming: There is time remaining for Sheridan to deliver on his various commitments to Paramount.
Sheridan is departing from his current home at Paramount for NBCUniversal starting on Jan. 1, 2029. Financial details of the overall deal for TV and movie development have not been disclosed, but Deadline characterized the agreement as “massive.” Sheridan’s deal with Paramount will expire ahead of the new deal with NBCU.
Paramount’s new ownership team has shown Sheridan plenty of public love since taking over, but they apparently could not come up with an offer compelling enough to keep him in the fold. Deadline also reports that under the old regime, Sheridan got a lot of wiggle room when it came to budgetary and production control questions, but the departure of former co-CEO Chris McCarthy may have signaled to Sheridan that he might not have the same freedom in the future.
There is a silver lining in the news for Paramount Skydance. The company announced in August that it had signed the Duffer brothers — the creators of “Stranger Things” — to a new TV and development deal starting in 2026. But losing Sheridan is an undoubted blow to the company.
Without more public details from Paramount or Sheridan, it’s hard to say how much of an effort was made to keep him in the fold. But as we predicted in July, the multi-hyphenate star creator found a new home for himself very quickly after making the decision that he wasn’t going back to Paramount.
Will Sheridan shows on Paramount+ finish?
There’s still plenty of time for Sheridan to develop the titles he’s been working on for Paramount, and to finish the shows that are already running on Paramount+ and Paramount cable channels. Viewers shouldn’t expect Sheridan to simply drop those titles and leave them with an unsatisfied feeling.
Check out the Sheridan titles still expected to arrive on Paramount+, and when you’ll be able to stream them. Many of these shows are in some form of initial development, but others have already released multiple seasons. The title we know the least about is “6666,” a series set at the real-life ranch purchased by Sheridan in Texas. There have been essentially no updates on that show since 2022, and it may never see the light of day, considering the number of other commitments Sheridan has made to Paramount before his deal with the studio ends.
