This free Gillian Anderson thriller is a must-watch on Tubi

If you want a smart, atmospheric thriller on Tubi, “The Fall” is the one to start with.

The underrated thriller to watch on Tubi is The Fall starring Gillian Anderson.

One of the best things about free streamers like Tubi is they’re weirdly great at surfacing stuff you probably missed the first time around. You go in expecting a free, easy scroll with (usually older) shows you’ve heard of, and then find something like an internationally acclaimed thriller sitting there waiting for you. That’s exactly the lane “The Fall” lives in. It’s classy, creepy, patient, critically adored, and somehow still not talked about nearly as much as it should be, despite starring the always-excellent Gillian Anderson. So, if you want the best under-the-radar thriller TV show on Tubi, this is my pick.

Why ‘The Fall’ is the most underrated thriller series on Tubi

I’m always a little more interested in thrillers that don’t assume you need a jump scare every seven minutes to stay invested. “The Fall” absolutely has the serial killer hook, and yes, it’s tense right away, but it’s playing a much colder, smarter, longer game. It’s set in Belfast, it stars Gillian Anderson as detective Stella Gibson and Jamie Dornan as serial killer Paul Spector, and instead of hiding the killer, it lets you sit with both sides from the jump. That changes the whole feel because you’re not watching to find out who did it — you’re watching this horrible, slow collision course that feels inevitable.

What really makes the show hit is how deliberate it is. A lot of crime shows race from clue to clue, often in an effort to keep you engaged because they lack depth — character depth, subplot depth, world-building depth, etc. “The Fall” does the opposite. It slows everything down and makes you live in dread. The suspense comes from routine, from silence, from somebody watching, from somebody noticing the wrong thing too late. That slow-burn style is a huge part of why critics loved it, but it’s probably also part of why it stayed a little under the radar. This is not background TV — you actually have to lean in. But if you do, it’s ridiculously rewarding.

Gillian Anderson is a massive reason this works as well as it does. Stella Gibson is cool, sharp, controlled, and quietly intimidating in a way that makes half the people around her seem like amateurs. She doesn’t have to do a lot of big speechifying. She just walks into a room, and you can feel the temperature change. Jamie Dornan, on the other side of the board, plays Paul Spector in a way that’s honestly more upsetting than if he went full monster all the time. He’s calm, domestic, methodical. He looks like a man who blends in, and that’s exactly what makes him so disturbing.

One big reason this show flew under the radar is that its release path was kind of all over the place. It started on RTÉ and BBC Two, came to the U.S. through Tubi, later turned up on Netflix and cable, and never really had that giant, clean, breakout moment where everybody was yelling about it at once. Instead, it became more of a word-of-mouth show, which honestly fits. People find it, get kind of obsessed with it, and then start telling other people, “Hey, have you seen ‘The Fall’ with the woman from ‘The X-Files’?”

That’s a very different kind of success than being a huge splashy mainstream hit, but it also explains why it still feels like a discovery.

That’s why this is such a great Tubi pick. It has the pedigree, the reviews, the performances, the awards, all of that. Season 1 alone was hugely acclaimed, and the show quietly built a real cult following over time. But because it lives in that moody, patient, psychological lane, and because it never got the loudest push here in the U.S., it still feels a little hidden in plain sight. For me, that’s the sweet spot when we’re talking under-the-radar.

The Fall

May 12, 2013

When the Police Service of Northern Ireland are unable to close a case after 28 days, Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson of the Metropolitan Police Service is called in to review the case. Under her new leadership, the local detectives must track down and stop a serial killer who is terrorising the city of Belfast.

What is ‘The Fall’ about?

“The Fall” follows Stella Gibson, a detective superintendent brought in from the Metropolitan Police to review a stalled murder investigation in Belfast, where a serial killer has been targeting professional women. At the same time, the show lets you watch the killer, Paul Spector, as he moves through his ordinary-looking life as a husband, father, and grief counselor while secretly stalking and murdering his victims. That split perspective is what makes the series so tense. It becomes less about solving a mystery and more about watching Stella slowly understand who she’s hunting, how he operates, and what it’s going to take to finally stop him.

Other underappreciated thriller TV shows on Tubi

If you’re into “The Fall” and want more underrated thrillers on Tubi, there are a few really good next moves. Start with “Killing Eve,” which is a lot splashier and more playful on the surface, but still gives you that same obsession-driven hunter-and-hunted energy.

Then go with “The Killing,” which is gloomier, slower, and probably the closest match if what you really want is atmosphere, emotional weight, and a case that just keeps sinking its claws in.

And don’t skip “Snowpiercer,” which is more high-concept than “The Fall,” obviously, but still scratches that pressure-cooker thriller itch if you like watching smart characters try to survive inside broken systems where tension never really lets up.
