‘The Chi’ to end after Season 8 on Showtime
‘The Chi’ to end after Season 8 on Showtime
The long-running drama series will get a proper farewell in its eighth and final season, according to reports.
It’s nearly time to say farewell to the Windy City for Showtime fans. The NAACP Image Award-nominated original drama series “The Chi” will be officially ending after its next season, which is no doubt sad news for fans of the series. If there is a silver lining to the announcement, it’s that “The Chi” will get to say a proper goodbye to fans, as fewer and fewer shows in the streaming era get to do.
Key Details:
- Chi-town blues: “The Chi” will end after its next season.
- Time to move on: Show creator Lena Waithe called the decision to end the series “the right thing.”
- Close to the top: At eight seasons, “The Chi” is one of the longest-running titles in SHOWTIME history.
Deadline was first to report that “The Chi” was ending after Season 8. The series airs on the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME premium cable channel, and also streams on the Paramount+ Premium plan, which includes the full Showtime library and streams Paramount+’s content ad-free as well.
Although she sounded reluctant to say goodbye to the show she created, creator Lena Waithe acknowledged in a statement that it was the best thing for the series to end after its upcoming eighth season.
“When I created ‘The Chi,’ it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity. It was about showing the soul of the South Side — the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family,” Waithe said. “After much reflection, we have made the decision to end ‘The Chi’ with Season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it’s the right thing. I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves.”
At eight seasons, “The Chi” is one of the longest-running titles in Showtime history. Only “Shameless” with its 11 seasons has gotten a longer run on the network, which means “The Chi” joins the prestigious company of SHOWTIME staple series “Dexter,” “Homeland,” and “Weeds” as titles that got eight-season runs on the platform.
“It’s been the honor of my life to build a platform for artists to shine — not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well,” Waithe continued. “To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it’s something I don’t take lightly.”
You can stream Seasons 1 through 7 of “The Chi” on Paramount+ Premium now. This costs $13 per month, or $120 per year, and comes with the full Paramount+ library, ad-free streaming, and a live stream of local CBS stations in all markets.
