‘The Great British Baking Show’ announces September premiere date
While the exact dates have yet to be confirmed, our experts have a prediction as to when the feel-good competition show will be back on Netflix.
As someone who lives in the ever-tropical climate of Florida, I must rely on other indicators to tell me that the seasons are changing aside from the weather. I can only distinguish between summer and fall by the dawning of two of my favorite “seasons”: college football season and “Great British Bake Off” season (sorry, Pillsbury, “Great British Baking Show” season). After numerous social media teases, it has been confirmed that the ultimate feel-good competition show will return to the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 on Tuesday, Sept. 22, which means that the show will almost certainly premiere on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 25.
Key Details:
- On your marks, get set, wait!: While official U.S. dates have not been announced, “GBBO” will be back on Netflix in September.
- We’ve got a prediction: Given previous cycles, we predict that the season premiere will stream in the U.S. on Friday, Sept. 25.
- Welcome to the tent: After nine seasons, Dame Prue Leith has retired, and she will be replaced by Nigella Lawson.
While the season naming conventions for the show have always been confusing — and have only gotten worse since Netflix took over the streaming rights — the new run of episodes (officially Series 17 in the U.K.) will be known as Collection 14 on Netflix on the streamer, and episodes will roll out weekly. It has been confirmed that new episodes will debut in September, but the exact date of the season premiere has yet to be announced. Last year, Series 16 premiered on Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the U.K., with Collection 13 beginning on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025. This has been the standard release schedule for the show since Netflix became the show’s U.S. streaming home in 2018.
So, assuming that Channel 4 and Netflix stick to their tried-and-true format, with the new season set to premiere in the U.K. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, American audiences should be able to stram the first episode featuring the new batch of bakers on Friday, Sept. 25, at 3:01 a.m. ET. Since there are usually 10 episodes per season, that means that the 2026 installment would wrap up on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in the U.K. and on Friday, Nov. 27 stateside, if our premiere prediction proves correct.
Regardless of when the episodes eventually arrive, there will be a major change inside the tent. Food writer and television cook Nigella Lawson is replacing Prue Leith as a judge, joining returning judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond. Leith departed after nine seasons, having replaced original judge Dame Mary Barry. Lawson’s culinary expertise and sense of humor seem like a perfect fit for the tent. Her iconic “mee-krow-wah-vay” quasi-mispronunciation is the perfect level of silliness that the show requires, even if the response to it was a bit over the top.
Netflix is also expected to continue streaming the franchise’s holiday specials, although those operate on a much longer delay. U.S. subscribers generally receive the previous year’s U.K. Christmas and New Year’s specials, meaning the 2025 festive episodes are expected to hit Netflix in late 2026, dates, unsurprisingly, to be announced. For the regular season, though, the wait remains mercifully short: Channel 4 viewers get “Bake Off” first, and Netflix subscribers should be only a few days — and hopefully very few spoilers — behind.
The Great British Bake Off
Britain’s best amateur bakers compete in the iconic white tent - all united in their aim to prove their baking skills and impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
