The Toniebox 2 did something no streaming service has ever done for my kid

The Toniebox 2 did something no streaming service has ever done for my kid

With 12+ years in digital media, he has led teams at CNET, Digital Trends and more. As a longtime cord-cutter, he knows the ins and outs of what and how we're all watching.

For a while, I’d been trying to find something that could replace the nightly screen negotiation with my daughter. You know the one — it’s 7:30 p.m., everyone’s tired, and the path of least resistance is handing her a tablet and calling it a night. I kept telling myself that there had to be a better answer. I just hadn’t found one yet. Then we got a Toniebox 2, and honestly, it changed our routine more than I ever expected it to.

With Screen-Free Week wrapping up this weekend, it felt like the right time to talk about this device that has had such a big impact on our family. If you’ve been looking for something that actually holds a kid’s attention without a screen, this is worth your time.

What you need to know about the Toniebox 2

What Is the Toniebox 2?

If you haven’t come across it before, the Toniebox is a screen-free audio player made especially for kids. Children place small character figures called Tonies on top of the box to play stories, songs, and other audio content; no apps, no menus, no swiping. A three-year-old can run it without any help, which is a big part of why it works.

The Toniebox 2 is the latest version, and it comes with some upgrades worth knowing about. Storage jumps to 32GB, four times what the original offered; charging is now done by USB-C; the exterior is softer than the first generation; there’s a new light ring that functions as a nightlight, sunrise alarm, and more, which turns the Toniebox into a bedside companion rather than just an audio gadget; and there’s a new feature called Tonieplay that brings interactive game elements into the mix while staying screen-free.

The part that actually surprised me

When we first got the Toniebox, I figured my daughter would use it a few times and move on, but that’s not what happened. She’s eight now, and for the past year, listening to a story on her Toniebox has become the last thing she does every night before she falls asleep. Not a show. not a video, and an audio story, in the dark, winding down on her own.

She started with the Junie B. Jones series and flew through it. Then moved on to Amelia Bedelia & Friends, which she’s been just as into. The books range in length from around 25 to 45 minutes, making them perfect for pre-bed story time.

But the thing that surprised me was what happened outside of bedtime. She started talking about her books with her friends, telling them what she’d listened to and recommending what they should try next. The Toniebox became something she takes real ownership of, which is something a streaming service has never done for her.

It goes wherever she goes

Another great aspect of the Toniebox is that there are no cords and no setup. She picks it up and takes it from her bedroom to the living room to a friend’s house without thinking twice. That portability is something I didn’t consider much before we had it, but it’s become one of the things I appreciate most. The device fits into her life rather than the other way around.

The light ring has also made a bigger difference than I expected. Having a nightlight and a sunrise alarm built into the same device that she’s already using for stories means the Toniebox isn’t competing with other aspects of her bedtime routine; it has become her bedtime routine. When the story ends, the night ends, and there’s no algorithm nudging her toward one more video.

What Screen-Free Week is really asking

Screen-Free Week isn’t about proving screens are bad. It’s about finding out what holds a kid’s attention when the easy option isn’t on the table. For a lot of families, including ours before this, the honest answer would have been “not much,” because nothing screen-free had been given a real chance to compete.

Audiobooks aren’t a step down from video; they build imagination and vocabulary in ways that passive viewing doesn’t, and they do it without you having to sit nearby and supervise. My daughter runs her Toniebox on her own; it’s enrichment happening without me having to manage it, which is hard to come by.

Screen-Free Week runs through May 10. If the Toniebox 2 has been on your radar, this is a good week to pull the trigger.
