Top 7 horror movies streaming on HBO Max right now.

I haven’t seen “Final Destination: Bloodlines” yet, but I’m planning to — especially with all the hype around it. The movie has already pulled in over $187 million worldwide, and a lot of people are saying it might be the best one in the whole “Final Destination” franchise. That got me back into the series, and lucky for me (and you), every “Final Destination” movie is streaming on HBO Max. These are the perfect horror movies for me because I have no trouble handling gore, and there’s no terrifying figure to keep me up at night. Instead, it’s everyday objects that become the things of nightmares. With “Final Destination: Bloodlines” killing in theaters, it got me thinking… what other horror gems are hiding on HBO Max? If you’re in the mood for something creepy, gory, or just plain unsettling, here are my picks for the best horror movies to stream on HBO Max right now.

Top 7 horror movies streaming on HBO Max right now:

No. 7: ‘Heretic’ (2024)

“Heretic” is one of those movies where you’re not totally sure what kind of horror you’re walking into — and that’s kind of the point. It starts out quiet and unsettling, then slowly morphs into something way darker and more twisted. Hugh Grant plays completely against type here, and the vibe is tense from the jump.

The story centers on two young missionaries who end up in the home of a reclusive man with mysterious beliefs. What unfolds is part psychological horror, part slow-burn thriller, with plenty of moments that’ll leave you squirming. It’s not a scream-every-five-minutes kind of movie, but if you like your horror more eerie than gory, this one gets under your skin.

Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

No. 6: ‘Final Destination 3’ (2006)

“Final Destination 3” kicks off our trio of franchise entries on this list — and it’s probably the most unhinged of the bunch. This one opens with a rollercoaster disaster that’s still talked about as one of the most intense premonition scenes in the series. Mary Elizabeth Winstead leads the cast, trying to stop death’s plan from picking off her classmates one by one.

The kills in this movie are some of the most creative (and absurd) the franchise has ever attempted. Tanning beds, nail guns, weight machines — nothing is safe. It leans harder into camp than the first two, but that also makes it fun to watch with a crowd. If you’re in it for inventive deaths and chaotic energy, this is a solid entry point.

High school senior Wendy’s premonition of a deadly rollercoaster ride saves her life and a lucky few, but not from death itself — which seeks out those who escaped their fate.

No. 5: ‘Companion’ (2025)

I saw “Companion” in theaters and totally loved it. It’s funny, unsettling, and entertaining the whole way through. The movie blends sci-fi with psychological thriller in a way that feels super current — especially with all the conversations happening around sentient AI. It’s a great ride with just the right balance of action, comedy, and thrills.

Jack Quaid is excellent as always, and Sophie Thatcher — who you probably know from “Yellowjackets” — completely holds her own. The movie digs into some pretty heavy questions about what it means to be alive, and whether an artificial being can actually feel something real and make its own decisions. But it never gets too bogged down in the ideas — it moves fast, feels slick, and hits all the right emotional beats. If you didn’t watch this one, definitely check it out.

During a weekend getaway at a secluded lakeside estate, a group of friends finds themselves entangled in a web of secrets, deception, and advanced technology. As tensions rise and loyalties are tested, they uncover unsettling truths about themselves and the world around them.

No. 4: ‘Final Destination 2’ (2003)

“Final Destination 2” is the one that truly cemented this franchise’s legacy — and gave us one of the most unforgettable highway scenes in horror history. The opening pileup is pure nightmare fuel, and it sets a new bar for how creatively brutal these movies could be. From there, the tension never really lets up as a new group of survivors scrambles to dodge fate all over again.

What makes this sequel stand out is how confidently it builds on the original without just copying it. The deaths are more elaborate, the pacing is tighter, and the sense of dread hangs over every scene. It also starts to play more with the rules of how death’s design works, which adds a layer of unpredictability. If you’re revisiting the series, this is the entry that proves “Final Destination” wasn’t a one-hit wonder.

Final Destination 2

When Kimberly has a violent premonition of a highway pileup she blocks the freeway, keeping a few others meant to die, safe…Or are they? The survivors mysteriously start dying and it’s up to Kimberly to stop it before she’s next.

No. 3: ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ (2024)

“I Saw the TV Glow” isn’t your average horror movie — it’s quiet, strange, and deeply personal. Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, it follows two lonely teenagers in the suburbs who bond over a mysterious late-night TV show called “The Pink Opaque.” But as the lines between their lives and the show start to blur, things spiral into something dreamlike, unsettling, and hard to shake.

This movie is more about mood than jump scares — filled with glowing purples, warped VHS static, and a growing sense of identity crisis. Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine are both fantastic, pulling you into a world that feels trapped between reality and some kind of fever dream. If you like horror that leans into emotional dread and surreal storytelling, this one will sit with you long after it’s over.

I Saw the TV Glow

May 3, 2024

In late-90s suburbia, a lonely teenager meets a girl at school who introduces him to a mysterious late-night T.V. show — a vision of a supernatural world pulsing beneath their own. As time goes on, however, questions begin to arise about why the show sometimes seems more real than their own lives. In the pale glow of the television, their view of reality begins to crack.

No. 2: ‘MaXXXine’ (2023)

I was already a fan of “X” and “Pearl,” so “MaXXXine” was high on my list — and it absolutely sticks the landing. Ti West’s final chapter in the trilogy moves the story to 1980s Los Angeles, where Maxine is chasing her dream of becoming a legitimate movie star while a serial killer stalks the city. It’s slasher meets Hollywood satire, with neon lights and sleaze to spare.

Mia Goth is magnetic once again, carrying the movie with that same mix of vulnerability and menace that made her so compelling in the first two. The kills are brutal, the style is pure ’80s fever dream, and the commentary on fame and exploitation hits even harder this time around. If you’ve followed Maxine’s story from the beginning, this final act feels big, bold, and totally earned.

In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

No. 1: ‘Final Destination’ (2000)

“Final Destination” is where it all began — and 25 years later, it still holds up. The concept is brilliant in its simplicity: a group of teens narrowly escapes a deadly plane crash thanks to a premonition, only to find out that you can’t really cheat death. What follows is a perfectly paced chain of suspense, with one iconic death scene after another.

What made this movie stand out from other slashers at the time was that there’s no killer in a mask — just fate itself, lurking in everyday objects and waiting to strike. Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, and Kerr Smith lead a cast that actually feels like real people, and the tone walks that perfect line between creepy and clever. With “Final Destination: Bloodlines” pulling in massive numbers, there’s no better time to go back to the original. It’s the reason the franchise took off — and it still delivers.
