Here are the best sci-fi action movies to streaming now, including 'The Old Guard 2'

I caught “M3GAN 2.0” in theaters, and I have a take that goes against the grain of popular opinion: I loved it. Now, it’s not a horror movie like the first “M3GAN.” It’s really a sci-fi action-comedy movie, and I think that’s why it’s struggling at the box office. That said, those audience members who have seen “M3GAN 2.0” love it even more than the first! The sequel has a higher audience score on Rotten Tomatoes than the original, while the critics, I guess, didn’t appreciate the change in genre. Fair enough — but for a sci-fi action movie, it’s a lot of fun. And it got me thinking of other great sci-fi action movies on streaming, so here’s a list of the top 7 you can stream right now.

Top 7 sci-fi action movies on streaming right now

No. 7: ‘The Old Guard 2’ (2025) | Netflix

“The Old Guard 2” picks up right where the first one left off — because yeah, that ending definitely felt like it was teeing up a sequel. This time around, the story dives deeper into the origin and limits of immortality, raising the stakes not just for the team but for the future of their kind. There’s a new threat tied to their past, and it forces the group to rethink who they trust and how far they’re willing to go to protect each other.

Charlize Theron is still the standout, but the whole crew has more to do this time, and the action feels even more intense. Add in some fresh faces like Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, and this makes for a solid sequel. If you’re into big fight sequences, emotional twists, and solid world-building, this one delivers — and sets things up perfectly for whatever comes next.

Andy and her team of immortal warriors fight with renewed purpose as they face a powerful new foe threatening their mission to protect humanity.

No. 6: ‘Pacific Rim’ (2013) | Netflix

“Pacific Rim” is what happens when Guillermo del Toro decides to make a giant monster movie — and goes all in. It’s not as emotional or artsy as stuff like “The Shape of Water” or “Pan’s Labyrinth,” but in terms of pure spectacle, it’s top-tier. The setup is simple: massive alien creatures (Kaiju) are invading Earth through a rift in the ocean, so humanity builds equally massive robots (Jaegers) to fight back.

What makes it stand out from other big-budget creature features is the style — everything looks and feels handcrafted, even when it’s massive CGI battles in the rain. The cast is solid, but honestly, you’re here for the robot vs. monster action, and it delivers. This is del Toro doing popcorn cinema, and I am so here for it.

Pacific Rim

July 11, 2013

Using massive piloted robots to combat the alien threat, Earth’s survivors take the fight to the invading alien force lurking in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless enemy, the forces of mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes who now stand as Earth’s final hope against the mounting apocalypse.

No. 5: ‘The Old Guard’ (2020) | Netflix

“The Old Guard” is sci-fi action done right. It’s about a group of immortal warriors who’ve been secretly fighting to protect the world for centuries — and now someone’s trying to expose them. My wife and I threw it on one night just because it was trending, and honestly, we didn’t expect much. But it totally blew us away.

The fight scenes are intense and creative, the story actually has some heart, and Charlize Theron is just effortlessly cool the whole time. It’s hard to make an action movie feel fresh these days, but this one pulls it off. And now that the sequel’s out, it’s the perfect time to catch up.

Four undying warriors who’ve secretly protected humanity for centuries become targeted for their mysterious powers just as they discover a new immortal.

No. 4: ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ (2025) | Hulu

“Predator: Killer of Killers” takes the franchise in a wild new direction — animated, R-rated, and completely unhinged in the best way. Director Dan Trachtenberg (who crushed it with “Prey”) splits the story across three brutal timelines: Viking-era Scandinavia, feudal Japan, and World War II Europe.

Each chapter pits a hardened human warrior against a Predator, and spoiler alert — the odds aren’t great. It’s packed with style, blood, and some surprisingly cool hand-to-hand combat, all with that classic Predator edge. If you’re into sci-fi action with swords, stealth, and pure chaos, this one goes hard.

Predator: Killer of Killers

June 5, 2025

While three of the fiercest warriors in human history—a Viking raider, a ninja in feudal Japan, and a WWII pilot—are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent: the ultimate killer of killers.

No. 3: ‘Inception’ (2010) | Max

I threw on “Inception” a couple of months ago because I was in the mood for a sci-fi movie I knew would hit — and I hadn’t watched it in over a decade. Newsflash: it’s still awesome. The action holds up, the visuals still look incredible, and Hans Zimmer’s score? Just as epic as you remember.

I did watch it with subtitles this time (helps a lot when you’re trying to follow dreams inside dreams inside more dreams), but even when it’s a little hard to follow, the movie never stops being cool. It’s easily one of Christopher Nolan’s best, and honestly, one of the most original action sci-fi movies ever made.

Inception

July 15, 2010

Cobb, a skilled thief who commits corporate espionage by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets is offered a chance to regain his old life as payment for a task considered to be impossible: “inception”, the implantation of another person’s idea into a target’s subconscious.

No. 2: ‘The Gorge’ (2025) | Apple TV+

“The Gorge” leans hard into sci-fi action, but with a twisted romantic core that sets it apart. It’s about two elite snipers — played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy — who are assigned to guard a mysterious gorge with something dangerous inside. They’re both lethal, closed-off, and clearly hiding stuff, but somehow they end up falling for each other in the middle of all this chaos.

The story gets intense fast, with brutal fight scenes and a slick, almost surreal vibe courtesy of director Scott Derrickson (same guy behind “The Black Phone”). It’s violent, emotional, and full of secrets — basically, if you like your sci-fi action with a side of betrayal and romance, this one’s a wild ride.

The Gorge

February 13, 2025

Two highly trained operatives grow close from a distance after being sent to guard opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. When an evil below emerges, they must work together to survive what lies within.

No. 1: ‘Minority Report’ (2002) | Paramount+

I watched “Minority Report” recently while deep in a Steven Spielberg binge — think “Jurassic Park” one night, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” the next — and honestly, this one might be his most underrated. It’s got all the high-concept sci-fi coolness you could want (pre-crime! psychic visions! futuristic tech!) but never loses the emotional core.

Tom Cruise is in full action-hero mode, but the story digs into some heavy stuff — fate, free will, and whether we actually control our future. The world-building is next-level, the action sequences still hold up, and it’s paced so well you forget it’s over two hours. Sci-fi thrillers don’t get much sharper than this, and that’s why it’s No. 1 on my list.

Minority Report

June 20, 2002

John Anderton is a top ‘Precrime’ cop in the late-21st century, when technology can predict crimes before they’re committed. But Anderton becomes the quarry when another investigator targets him for a murder charge.
