Here are the top 7 sci-fi robot AI movies to stream now

I haven’t seen “Companion” yet, but it’s been on my list for a few months. It’s a sci-fi horror-thriller about an AI robot named Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who was built to be the perfect companion (in more ways than one…) until she starts questioning everything about her existence. The movie dives into themes of control, identity, and what it really means to be human. With AI being such a hot topic these days, it got me thinking about some of the best sci-fi movies featuring AI-powered robots - so here are seven of my favorites you can stream right now.

Top 7 sci-fi robot movies you can stream right now

No. 7: ‘M3GAN’ (2023) | Peacock

Coming in at No. 7 on the list of top sci-fi robot movies is the wildly entertaining ”M3GAN.” I saw this 2022 horror-sci-fi hit when it dropped on Peacock after a buzzy theatrical run and it didn’t disappoint. The film follows a brilliant roboticist (Allison Williams) who creates an AI-powered doll designed to be the perfect companion for kids. But M3GAN quickly takes her directive - protecting her new owner - to terrifying extremes. What makes M3GAN so fun is its mix of creepy tension, dark humor, and campy thrills. From viral dance sequences to unsettling AI logic, it’s a modern take on the “killer robot” story that manages to be both ridiculous and spooky. It’s not a truly scary movie (I can’t do those), but it does deliver thrills and laughs with its hilariously over-the-top moments. And with a sequel on the way, “M3GAN” has already earned its place in the AI horror hall of fame.

M3GAN

December 28, 2022

A brilliant toy company roboticist uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend with terrifying results.

No. 6: ‘Ex Machina’ (2015) | Rent with Prime Video

Coming in at No. 6 is “Ex Machina,” a sleek and unsettling sci-fi thriller that dives deep into the world of artificial intelligence. Directed by Alex Garland, the film follows a young programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) who wins the chance to spend a week at the secluded estate of his reclusive billionaire boss (Oscar Isaac). But his real task? Testing the consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a hyper-intelligent AI with a strikingly human presence. What makes “Ex Machina” so gripping is the tension that builds between its three central characters, keeping you questioning who’s really in control. With great visuals, sharp dialogue, and a chilling look at the dangers of AI, it’s an important part of the sci-fi cannon that stayed with me long after it was over.

Ex Machina

Caleb, a coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.

No. 5: ’I, Robot’ (2004) | Hulu

I remember watching “I, Robot” for the first time and loving it. Set in 2035, this action-packed sci-fi thriller stars Will Smith as a detective who doesn’t trust robots - an opinion that puts him at odds with a world where AI-driven machines are an everyday part of life. But when a scientist turns up dead, and the prime suspect is an advanced robot named Sonny, he starts uncovering a conspiracy that could change everything. What makes “I, Robot” so fun is how it blends big ideas about AI ethics with epic action sequences fueled by Smith’s charisma. It’s the kind of movie that keeps you entertained while making you wonder - how close are we to a future like this?

I, Robot

July 15, 2004

In 2035, where robots are commonplace and abide by the three laws of robotics, a technophobic cop investigates an apparent suicide. Suspecting that a robot may be responsible for the death, his investigation leads him to believe that humanity may be in danger.

No. 4: ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ (2001) | Paramount+

Coming in at No. 4 is one of the most emotionally powerful sci-fi films ever made: ”A.I. Artificial Intelligence.” Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a concept from Stanley Kubrick, this 2001 film tells the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), a highly advanced robot designed to love like a real child. When he’s abandoned by his adoptive human family, David embarks on a journey to find where he truly belongs. What makes “A.I.” so powerful (besides coming from one of the greatest directors of all time) is how it grounds a dazzling futuristic world in deep, human emotions. It’s a movie that asks big questions about love, consciousness, and what it really means to be alive. Equal parts beautiful and devastating, this is sci-fi storytelling at its most interesting.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

June 29, 2001

David, a robotic boy—the first of his kind programmed to love—is adopted as a test case by a Cybertronics employee and his wife. Though he gradually becomes their child, a series of unexpected circumstances make this life impossible for David.

This dark Spielberg tale is a movie Stanley Kubrick had intended to film. The movie is anchored by a great performance by a young Haley Joel Osment.

No. 3: ‘RoboCop’ (1987) | Max

Few sci-fi action movies have left a bigger impact than ”RoboCop,” coming in at No. 3. This 1987 classic follows Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), a cop in crime-ridden Detroit who is brutally gunned down - only to be resurrected as a cybernetic law enforcement machine. But beneath the armor and cutting-edge tech, fragments of his former self start to surface, setting up a battle between his programmed AI directives and his lingering humanity. RoboCop isn’t just a thrilling action movie - it’s also a satire of corporate greed, media manipulation, and the militarization of technology. Packed with over-the-top violence, dark humor, and unforgettable one-liners (“Dead or alive, you are coming with me”), it’s a sci-fi classic that still feels eerily relevant today.

RoboCop

July 17, 1987

In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company’s nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

No. 2: ‘The Terminator’ (1984) | Rent with Prime Video

Coming in at No. 2 is ”The Terminator,” one of the most iconic sci-fi films of all time. This 1984 classic launched Arnold Schwarzenegger into superstardom as the unstoppable T-800, a killer cyborg sent from the future to eliminate Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) before she can give birth to humanity’s savior. “The Terminator” is first and foremost a great action movie with a terrifying AI villain - Schwarzenegger’s robotic assassin barely speaks, but his presence is relentless. It’s a movie that not only defined the sci-fi genre but also influenced everything from AI paranoia in pop culture to the way action movies are made. With groundbreaking special effects, a killer synth soundtrack, and some of the most quoted lines in movie history (“I’ll be back…” and back and back and with sequels), “The Terminator” isn’t just one of the best robot movies - it’s one of the best action movies too.

The Terminator

October 26, 1984

In the post-apocalyptic future, reigning tyrannical supercomputers teleport a cyborg assassin known as the “Terminator” back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, whose unborn son is destined to lead insurgents against 21st century mechanical hegemony. Meanwhile, the human-resistance movement dispatches a lone warrior to safeguard Sarah. Can he stop the virtually indestructible killing machine?

No. 1: ‘Blade Runner’ (1982) | Rent on Prime Video

It’s extremely rare when the movie adaptation of a book comes out better than the book. Well, I read “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” a couple of years ago and I loved it. But I love ”Blade Runner” more. Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece didn’t just redefine the genre - it built an entirely new vision of the future that still influences sci-fi today. Set in a rain-soaked, neon-lit dystopia, the film follows Harrison Ford’s Deckard, a weary blade runner tasked with hunting down rogue replicants - AI-powered humanoids who might be more human than the people chasing them. “Blade Runner” isn’t just about stunning visuals or groundbreaking special effects (though it has both) - it’s about deep existential questions. What does it mean to be alive? Can a machine have a soul? With haunting performances, a mesmerizing Vangelis score, and one of the greatest monologues in film history (“tears in rain…”), “Blade Runner” isn’t just the best sci-fi robot movie - it’s one of the most influential films ever made.

Blade Runner

June 25, 1982

In the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, blade runner Rick Deckard is called out of retirement to terminate a quartet of replicants who have escaped to Earth seeking their creator for a way to extend their short life spans.
