The 7 best sports comedy shows to stream right now

Owen Wilson’s ‘Stick’ is the newest addition to a lineup filled with chaos, charm, and underdogs you’ll root for.

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.
best sports comedies like Ted Lasso

I started “Stick” on a random weeknight, just looking for something light to throw on while making dinner — but halfway through the first episode, I hit pause. My wife needed to see this, too. So we started over together and ended up binging as many episodes as we could. It’s got real “Ted Lasso” vibes: heart, humor, and a lovable (and heartbreaking) lead in Owen Wilson. And honestly, it reminded me that when sports comedies are done right, they’re unbeatable. In that spirit, here are the seven best sports comedy TV shows streaming right now.

Top 7 sport comedy TV shows on streaming right now:

No. 7: ‘Blue Mountain State’ (2010) | Prime Video

“Blue Mountain State” is completely unhinged in the best way. It’s not really about football — it’s about the chaos around it. Parties, pranks, hazing, and a team full of players who care way more about the perks than the plays. If you want something loud, wild, and totally ridiculous, this one goes hard and doesn’t let up. Sure, hazing may be a thing of the past now, but it’s very much a part of the present in “Blue Mountain State.”

Three incoming freshman in a big-time, Midwestern college football program have to juggle football, girls, class and nonstop hazing.

No. 6: ‘Brockmire’ (2017) | AMC+

“Brockmire” kicks off with a meltdown so legendary it goes viral — and that’s just the first five minutes. Hank Azaria plays a disgraced baseball announcer trying to clean up his act in the minor leagues, but his filter-free commentary and self-sabotage tendencies keep things messy. It’s crude, weirdly heartfelt, and way funnier than you’d expect from a show about baseball rehab. Plus, I always have time for Hank Azaria, and he delivers.

Brockmire

April 5, 2017

A famed major league baseball announcer who suffers an embarrassing and very public meltdown live on the air after discovering his beloved wife’s serial infidelity decides to reclaim his career and love life in a small town a decade later.

No. 5: ‘Ballers’ (2015) | HBO Max

Dwayne Johnson has come a long way from the wrestling ring, and “Ballers” is proof the guy never stops grinding. He plays Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player trying to make it big as a financial manager for pro athletes. The show’s flashy, fast-paced, and full of egos, but it’s The Rock’s relentless charm that keeps it grounded. The man puts in the work, and it shows.

Looking at the lives of former and current football players, the show follows former superstar Spencer Strasmore as he gets his life on track in retirement while mentoring other current and former players through the daily grind of the business of football.

No. 4: ‘Eastbound & Down’ (2009) | HBO Max

Danny McBride kicked off his HBO Max hit streak with “Eastbound & Down,” and he’s been on a roll ever since — just look at “The Righteous Gemstones.” Here, he plays Kenny Powers, a washed-up, foul-mouthed former MLB pitcher with more ego than talent. It’s loud, messy, and completely addictive. Kenny is the kind of character you hate to love — and love to watch spiral.

Years after he turned his back on his hometown, a burned-out major league ballplayer returns to teach phys ed at his old middle school.

No. 3: ‘Running Point’ (2025) | Netflix

“Running Point” has Mindy Kaling’s fingerprints all over it — in the best way. Kate Hudson plays Isla, a branding exec suddenly running her family’s NBA team after her brother’s drug scandal blows up. She’s got zero basketball experience, but plenty of confidence, and watching her try to wrangle players, execs, and family drama is a total blast. It’s fast, funny, and full of behind-the-scenes sports chaos that makes you feel you’re getting an inside look at professional basketball.

A reformed party girl must prove herself as a businesswoman when she’s unexpectedly put in charge of her family’s pro basketball team.

No. 2: ‘Stick’ (2025) | Apple TV+

“Stick” might look like a “Ted Lasso” clone on the surface — but early returns prove it’s got a spirit all its own. Owen Wilson brings that same easygoing charm Jason Sudeikis nailed, playing a washed-up golf pro trying to turn his life around by coaching a teenage phenom. Divorce, grief, and depression sit right under the surface, but the show never gets bogged down — it’s all heart and second chances. You don’t need to know anything about golf to get into it (my wife is proof), but if you do love golf like I do? “Stick” is a hole-in-one (sorry, had to do it).

Pryce Cahill was headed for golf greatness when an on-course meltdown derailed his career. Now struggling to stay afloat, he goes all in to mentor Santi—a teenage phenom with immense potential—and maybe save himself.

No. 1: ‘Ted Lasso’ (2020) | Apple TV+

“Ted Lasso” is one of my favorite shows of all time. No other series can make you laugh out loud and tear up in the span of a single episode quite like this one. The writing? Top-tier. The acting? Outstanding. The storytelling? Next level. And somehow, it still adds up to more than the sum of its parts — kind of like a great team (get it??). It’s heartfelt, hopeful, and flat-out magical. One of the best sports comedy shows ever made. “Believe” it.
