I’ll be honest… I’m usually not a huge superhero guy. But that may have changed for good after I watched “Superman,” first in theaters, and then again on HBO Max. That movie did the one thing every movie should do: it moved me emotionally. It was hopeful, sincere, and genuinely fun in a way that caught me off guard. I loved it so much it sent me back through my watchlists, digging up the best superhero movies streaming right now. If you’re in the mood for big swings, messy heroes, and stories that actually have a pulse, these are the superhero movies I’d start with.

Top 7 superhero movies on streaming right now

No. 7: ‘Thunderbolts’ (2025) | Disney+

Marvel team-up movies keep getting weirder, and “Thunderbolts” might be the strangest yet. Instead of shiny heroes, this one brings together a lineup of emotional wrecks and former villains. Florence Pugh’s Yelena, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent all feel like people who probably shouldn’t be in charge of anything. The movie leans into that discomfort, and the result feels intentionally off-kilter in a way that really works.

The story plays less like a traditional superhero plot and more like group therapy with explosions. Valentina sends the team on what’s basically a suicide mission, only for them to bond over shared trauma and accidentally uncover something much bigger. Bob, who turns out to be the unstable super-being Sentry, becomes the emotional core of the movie, especially when his darker half traps people inside their worst memories. The climax ends with connection instead of domination, which surprised me. It’s messy, loud, and oddly sincere. Like a superhero version of “The Breakfast Club” that actually cares about feelings.

After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, seven disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

No. 6: ‘Madame Web’ (2024) | Disney+

Sony’s Spider-verse swings in a very different direction with “Madame Web.” Dakota Johnson plays Cassie Webb, a Manhattan paramedic whose life flips after she starts seeing the future. The movie leans into early-2000s superhero energy, with long conversations, slower pacing, and a focus on destiny rather than spectacle. It didn’t land for everyone, but there’s a charm to how seriously it takes itself.

Once Cassie realizes her visions can save lives, the movie turns into a strange road trip as she tries to protect three teenagers destined to become Spider-Women. The second half gets pretty wild, with Amazonian lore, spider rituals, and revelations about Cassie’s mother that reframe everything. It’s more earnest than edgy, but I found myself rooting for these characters anyway. The dialogue can be clunky, sure, but there’s something sweet about watching Cassie step into a mentor role and choose responsibility over fear.

Forced to confront revelations about her past, paramedic Cassandra Webb forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

No. 5: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ (2024) | Netflix

Before watching “Kraven the Hunter,” I didn’t think the character could carry a full movie. Turns out I was wrong. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff as a damaged, obsessive anti-hero shaped by grief and abuse. The movie leans hard into noir territory, with broken families, violent instincts, and a hero who isn’t exactly trying to be liked.

This isn’t a clean origin story. Sergei survives a near-death encounter as a kid, grows up under the shadow of his crime-lord father, and eventually becomes a vigilante who hunts predators rather than protecting cities. When his brother is kidnapped and Rhino enters the picture, the story spirals into something darker and stranger. The animal-themed action is brutal and creative, especially a buffalo stampede sequence that’s both ridiculous and unsettling. It’s not prestige filmmaking, but it’s way more interesting than I expected.

Kraven Kravinoff’s complex relationship with his ruthless gangster father, Nikolai, starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.

No. 4: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ (2024) | Netflix

Tom Hardy’s chaotic partnership with an alien gets a surprisingly emotional send-off in “Venom: The Last Dance.” What started as a weird buddy comedy ends as a full-on cosmic story about sacrifice and friendship. Even if the trilogy has been uneven, this finale commits hard to its emotional core.

The movie goes big, jumping universes, introducing government threats, and unleashing monsters that feel ripped from sci-fi horror. There’s a desert fight involving a plane, a wild Area 51 sequence, and a full symbiote jailbreak that leans into pure spectacle. But the thing that stuck with me was the ending. The choice Venom makes in the end really lands. I didn’t expect to feel anything during a Venom movie, yet here we are.

Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.

No. 3: ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ (2025) | Disney+

Anthony Mackie (I used to see him all the time at LA Fitness in Hollywood, nice job man!) finally steps fully into the shield in “Captain America: Brave New World.” This one plays less like a traditional superhero movie and more like a messy political thriller with wings. Sam Wilson isn’t trying to live up to Steve Rogers. He’s trying to figure out what leadership actually means in a broken system.

The plot throws a lot at the wall. Illegal adamantium deals, mind-control triggers, global summits, and a president who, uh, well, just see for yourself. But what I liked was the character work between Sam and Joaquin Torres. Their banter feels earned, and Sam’s internal struggle carries the movie. It’s uneven and overloaded at times, but the heart is clear.

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

No. 2: ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ (2025) | Disney+

Marvel finally figured out how to make the “Fantastic Four” work with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Instead of another origin story, the movie drops us into a retro-futuristic world where the team is already famous, functional, and deeply human. The mid-century aesthetic alone makes this one feel fresh.

The emotional hook comes when Sue reveals she’s pregnant, right as Galactus threatens Earth. The central dilemma isn’t how to punch the villain harder. It’s whether Reed and Sue are willing to sacrifice their future child to save the planet. That choice drives everything, leading to wild solutions like relocating Earth itself and a genuinely moving final act. The movie balances cosmic scale with family drama in a way Marvel hasn’t nailed in years, and, right next to “Superman,” this was my favorite superhero movie of 2025.

The Fantastic 4: First Steps

Against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel’s First Family is forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, while defending Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.

No. 1: ‘Superman’ (2025) | HBO Max

James Gunn’s “Superman” sits at the top because it remembers why this character matters. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent with warmth and humility, and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is perfect. The movie is funny, unreal to look at, incredibly well-acted, and most importantly, it actually humanizes Superman in a way few movies ever have.

The story throws chaos at Superman from every angle, including engineered enemies, public distrust, and even messages from Krypton pushing him toward domination. But Clark never wavers. He saves people first, listens second, and fights last. Watching him choose empathy over ego, even when it costs him, is deeply satisfying. By the end, with allies at his side and Krypto stealing scenes, the movie lands on something rare for the genre: sincerity. It’s colorful, emotional, and honestly, the most fun I’ve had watching a superhero movie in a long time.
