Why ‘Andor’ should be your first drama binge on Disney+

Why ‘Andor’ should be your first drama binge on Disney+

It’s a grounded spy thriller that works even if you don’t speak ‘Star Wars.’

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.
"Andor" is my pick to watch first if you just signed up for Disney+

When I open Disney+, I’m usually thinking Marvel, animated classics, or lightsabers. But if you just signed up and want a drama that proves this platform can hang with the prestige crowd, start with “Andor.” It’s a tense, character-first spy story set in the “Star Wars” universe that doesn’t require a deep franchise knowledge to enjoy. No homework, no catching up on decades of lore — just a sharp, lived-in world, high stakes, and a lead you really get behind. If you’re picking one drama series to hit play on first after signing up for Disney+, this is the one.

Why ‘Andor’ is the must-watch drama on Disney+

If you just signed up for Disney+, start with “Andor.” I’ve never been a giant “Star Wars” person — which is probably why this hits so hard for me. It plays like a grounded political thriller first and a space saga second. No Jedi, no lightsabers, no prior knowledge necessary. Just regular people getting pushed into a rebellion, and the show actually treats that with real weight. The show sets the pieces, builds the characters, and lets you find the rhythm. It’s patient without being slow, and it trusts you to keep up, which I love.

“Andor” focuses on regular people under an empire’s boot. We’re with workers, shopkeepers, and mid-level functionaries trying to survive. And the stakes stay personal and messy, which is perfect if you’re like me and you don’t speak “Star Wars.” Even the antagonists feel like humans trapped in a machine, exploring those moral grey areas, all great dramas do.

What really sold me on “Andor,” though, is the world-building and just how real it all looks. The team shot on location and built big practical sets, so streets, alleys, markets, and offices feel solid. You can practically feel the dust and metal. With eye-level cameras and natural lighting, scenes play like you’re standing there, not staring at a screensaver. Suddenly, that “galaxy far, far away” feels like a place you could actually walk through.

Story-wise, “Andor” runs in clean arcs that play like mini-movies. You get a tense opener that drops you into Cassian’s world, a high-stakes heist, a claustrophobic prison stretch, and a powder-keg uprising — each with its own vibe and payoffs. No spoilers, just a heads-up that it’s a slow burn in the best way: steady pressure, then big, earned releases that stick with you.

If you just grabbed Disney+ and want one drama to start with, make it “Andor.” It’s wildly accessible if you’re not a “Star Wars” person, and the practical world-building pulls you right in. It’s visually gorgeous and cinematic while the story stays human-scale. I showed up out of more curiosity than anything, and wound up with a smart, lived-in thriller about what resistance actually looks like. For my money, it belongs at the very top of your Disney+ queue.

What is ‘Andor’ about?

“Andor” is a ground-level spy thriller dressed up as a “Star Wars” show. We meet Cassian Andor, a scrapper and small-time hustler trying to keep his head down under the Empire, and watch as one bad night puts him on the radar of both a sharp-eyed spymaster and the people hunting him. No Jedi, no magic tricks — just factories, alleyways, backroom deals, and the slow realization that survival sometimes means picking a side. It’s set before “Rogue One,” but you don’t need to know any of that because the show builds its own world and lets you walk into it cold.

“Andor” plays out in tight arcs that each feel like their own mini-movie: a messy cover-up that snowballs, a heist that could fund a movement, a brutal prison stretch that says a lot about power and control, and a local community deciding how far it’ll go to push back. While Cassian is learning what resistance actually costs on the ground, you’re also with Senator Mon Mothma quietly bankrolling a secret network in plain sight, and the Imperial Security Bureau closing in piece by piece. That’s the show in a nutshell: ordinary people, dangerous choices, and the nuts-and-bolts work of building a rebellion from scratch.

Other must-stream drama shows on Disney+

If you want more grounded, character-first storytelling after “Andor,” start with “The Mandalorian.” It follows Din Djarin, a lone bounty hunter whose simple job goes sideways when the target turns out to be a mysterious child. Suddenly, it’s not just bounties and guild codes but a road story about loyalty, survival, and doing the right thing when it’s not the easy thing. Think space Western vibes, quiet towns on the edge of the map, shifting alliances, and a protective bond that gives the action real heart.

Craving something twisty with big ideas? “Loki” dives into time, fate, and identity without drowning you in homework. The god of mischief gets roped into the Time Variance Authority and has to help fix problems he usually causes. It’s part cat-and-mouse thriller, part office drama about a massive bureaucracy that decides what “should” happen. The fun is watching Loki push back, figure himself out, and test the rules of free will… all while the clock is literally ticking.

For a bold swing, “WandaVision” starts as a retro sitcom in a perfect little suburb and slowly lets the cracks show. Each episode riffs on a different TV era, but underneath the laugh track, it’s a story about grief, control, and how far we go to protect the life we want. It’s inventive without being confusing, emotional without getting syrupy, and it sticks the landing as a human story first, superhero stuff second.
