Why ‘Mad Men’ is the must-watch drama on AMC+
“Mad Men” wasn’t AMC’s first scripted series, but it was the one that made people pay attention. Created by Matthew Weiner, it pulls you into 1960s Manhattan and drops you right into the boozy, pitch-heavy world of advertising.
The center of it all is Don Draper — handsome, mysterious, emotionally wrecked — navigating life at a high-powered agency while keeping his demons barely under wraps. The show is gorgeous to look at, smart as hell, and surprisingly funny when it wants to be.
And I’m not the only one who thinks this show’s worth watching. “Mad Men” won 16 Emmys, five Golden Globes, and took home the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy four years in a row — the first basic-cable show to ever do that. It racked up over 100 Emmy noms, and yeah, it still pops up on “best shows of all time” lists all the time.
But awards aside, there’s just something special about it. “Mad Men” uses the ad world as a mirror to reflect the massive cultural shifts of the 1960s. You get storylines that touch on feminism, racism, mental health, Vietnam… and somehow it never feels like a history lesson. The characters are messy, complicated, and so well drawn. Don can make you cringe one second and break your heart the next. Peggy’s rise is one of the most satisfying arcs on TV.
I think what I like most about this show is that it knows how to have fun. The office politics, the fashion, the long lunches that turn into longer hangovers, it’s got one of the best drama-to-funny-line ratios I’ve ever seen. And every single episode is now streaming on AMC+. So whether you’re sipping an Old Fashioned or just firing up La Croix, settle in and let Don Draper take it from here.
What is ‘Mad Men’ about?
Set in 1960, “Mad Men” starts at Sterling Cooper, a Madison Avenue ad agency that runs on cigarettes, martinis, and fragile male egos. Don Draper is the creative genius at the center of it all (played by Jon Hamm), but he’s also living a lie. As the show unfolds, we follow Don through office battles, love affairs, and personal breakdowns, all while the world changes around him.
But it’s not just about Don. Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) starts as a secretary and turns into a powerhouse copywriter. Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) owns every room she walks into. Roger’s there for the comic relief (and the emotional gut punches you don’t see coming). Betty Draper’s stuck in a picture-perfect suburb that’s secretly soul-crushing. Even side characters like Pete Campbell and Lane Pryce bring surprising depth. Each season covers one or two years of the ‘60s, so you’re watching history unfold through these beautifully flawed people. And the pitch scenes (especially the one with the Kodak carousel) are some of the best writing ever put on TV.
Other must-stream drama shows on AMC+

If “Mad Men” doesn’t sound like what you’re looking for, don’t worry because AMC+ has a few other great shows worth watching.
You can start with “Dark Winds,” a slow-burn crime series set in the early ‘70s on the Navajo Nation. It kicks off with a heist sequence and unfolds into a twisting murder investigation with cultural weight behind every move. Zahn McClarnon is excellent as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, and with Native writers and directors behind the scenes, this one feels personal and lived-in in a way most crime dramas don’t. It’s gritty, moody, and totally absorbing.
Next up is “Orphan Black,” a sci-fi thriller that starts with one woman witnessing her own doppelgänger jump in front of a train and then spirals into something way bigger. Tatiana Maslany plays all the clones (and somehow makes each one feel totally distinct), as the story pulls you into a conspiracy involving shady biotech companies, underground experiments, and questions about identity, free will, and what it means to be human. It’s twisty, smart, and surprisingly emotional, and once it hooks you, good luck putting it down.
For something more gothic and supernatural, check out “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches.” Alexandra Daddario plays a neurosurgeon who finds out she’s the heir to a powerful witch dynasty. You’ve got creepy New Orleans mansions, cursed bloodlines, and a whole lot of dark magic. Check it out.
