‘Game of Thrones’ became a global obsession — and it holds up.

The first show to watch when subbing to HBO Max is... Game of Thrones.

HBO Max (yep, they’re back to calling it that) has pretty much held the crown when it comes to prestige TV for as long as I can remember. Sure, Apple TV+ is giving them a run for their money these days, but there’s no denying this is the streamer behind some of the best shows of all time. So if you just signed up and you’re staring at the homepage and wondering what to watch first? For me, the answer’s easy: “Game of Thrones.” Here’s why…

Why ‘Game of Thrones’ is the must-watch drama on HBO Max

Despite a mixed final season, “Game of Thrones” is still the gold standard when it comes to big, sweeping, totally addictive drama. Set in the fictional land of Westeros, the show follows rival families as they fight for control of the Iron Throne — the seat of ultimate power. You’ve got noble houses like the Starks in the North, the scheming Lannisters down South, and exiled Daenerys Targaryen building her army across the sea. All while something much darker is lurking as the long, long summer comes to an end.

From the jump, it throws you into this brutal world of shifting alliances, ancient prophecies, and ruthless betrayals… and somehow makes every part of it feel personal. The fantasy stuff is cool (yes, dragons are awesome), but the real hook is how grounded it all feels. You care about these characters. You stress over their choices. And when the show hits you with one of its brutal twists? It stings, man.

For me, what sets “Game of Thrones” apart is how satisfying its payoffs are. Even in the slower episodes, there’s this constant sense of tension — like something huge is always just around the corner. And when those big moments do come, they are EPIC. The Battle of the Bastards, the Red Wedding, Tyrion’s trial, even that first jaw-dropping moment with Ned Stark… it’s a masterclass in how to keep an audience on edge and reward them for investing so much time into the show. And look, I like “House of the Dragon” too, but rewatching “Thrones” reminds you just how massive and ambitious this show really was. Nothing else has come close.

Also, it just feels like HBO Max. Cinematic. Bold. Expensive in the best way. This is the kind of show that built the whole idea of prestige TV — the one that made appointment viewing a thing again. So, if you just signed up for HBO Max and want something that’ll totally suck you in, this is the show to start with. It’s a masterfully made TV show, and if you invest in it, it becomes unforgettable.

Game of Thrones

April 17, 2011

Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Friction between the houses leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night’s Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond.

What is ‘Game of Thrones’ about?

“Game of Thrones” is a medieval fantasy series built around one central question: who gets to rule? Set in a brutal, war-torn land called Westeros, the show follows a web of noble families all vying for control of the Iron Throne. There’s political scheming, arranged marriages, shifting alliances, and a whole lot of backstabbing. Some want power out of pure ambition, others are trying to survive or protect their families. At the center of it all are characters like Jon Snow, a quiet outsider with a mysterious past, and Daenerys Targaryen, a displaced queen with dragons and a growing following. But for every true hero, there’s a villain — or at least someone who thinks they’re the hero.

And while the fight for the throne takes up a lot of the spotlight, there’s a second story brewing in the background: something ancient and terrifying stirring in the far north. As summer fades and winter creeps in, a supernatural threat called the White Walkers starts making its way south. So you’ve got this layered show that juggles intimate character drama, cutthroat politics, and looming horror all at once. That’s what makes it so compelling… it’s not just one thing. It’s a story about legacy, loyalty, revenge, and the cost of power, told on the biggest possible scale.

Other must-stream drama shows on HBO Max

If you’re looking for more all-time greats after finishing “Game of Thrones,” HBO Max has some of the most iconic drama series ever made. Start with “The Sopranos,” the mob drama that redefined what TV could be. It’s a deep, often brutal look at a modern-day mafia boss trying to keep his empire and his mental health from falling apart. James Gandolfini is unreal in the lead, and the writing still holds up decades later.

Then there’s “The Wire,” a slow-burning, insanely detailed portrait of life in Baltimore. It’s part cop show, part political drama, part journalism critique — all tied together by a cast of characters you’ll never forget. The way it weaves together crime, corruption, and broken systems is unlike anything else on TV.

And finally, “Succession” brings all the palace intrigue of “Thrones” into the boardroom. It follows the Roy family, a filthy-rich media dynasty, as they backstab and scheme their way through one power struggle after another. It’s razor-sharp, painfully funny, and hits you in the gut emotionally. These three shows are basically essential if you want to see HBO Max at its absolute best.
