New to AMC+? Start with the thriller ‘Fear the Walking Dead’

The series captures the collapse of society in real time with a faster, more chaotic edge.

If you just signed up for AMC+ and you’re trying to figure out what thriller show to start with, I have thoughts. There’s a pretty big catch with this platform right away, which is that “The Walking Dead” isn’t actually on AMC+… it mostly lives over on Netflix. And yeah, that’s kind of a problem when you’re talking about AMC’s biggest franchise. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. If you want to jump into this world on AMC+, the cleanest, most obvious starting point is “Fear the Walking Dead.” Here’s why I think it’s the first thriller you should watch when you sign up for AMC+.

Why ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ is the must-watch thriller on AMC+

“Fear the Walking Dead” hooks you in a completely different way than most apocalypse shows because it doesn’t start after the world ends. It drops you right into the early days of the zombie outbreak, when everything is just starting to fall apart. You’re watching normal life slowly crack, then collapse, then completely spiral. That early stretch, especially in Season 1, is where the show really separates itself. There’s this constant tension because nobody fully understands what’s happening yet. People are confused, scared, making bad decisions, and trying to hold onto normal life for just a little too long. It’s messy in a way that feels real, and that’s what makes it so intense.

Once things fully break, the show leans hard into this moral gray area, and that’s where it really finds its identity. Madison Clark, played by Kim Dickens, isn’t your typical hero. She’s sharp, controlled, and willing to do things that make you pause for a second and go, “wait… was that the right move?” And that’s kind of the point. Nobody really knows what the “right” move is anymore. Around her, you’ve got characters like Alicia, Nick, and later Strand and Morgan, all trying to figure out how to survive in their own way. The show constantly puts them in situations where survival and morality are at odds, and it doesn’t give you easy answers. That tension carries the whole series.

What also makes “Fear” work is how different it feels stylistically from “The Walking Dead.” It’s faster, a little more chaotic, and focused on how things are going wrong right now. Early on, it has this jittery, uneasy energy that keeps you on edge. You’re not watching people adapt to a broken world. You’re watching them get overwhelmed by it. And as the show evolves, it starts taking bigger swings with its settings and storylines, from border conflicts to full-blown wasteland scenarios, but that core tension never really goes away.

And then there’s just the scale of it. This show was huge when it launched. We’re talking record-breaking cable ratings, massive audience interest, and a fanbase that stuck with it for eight seasons. It wasn’t just riding the coattails of “The Walking Dead,” it became its own thing. And at its peak, especially around Season 3, a lot of people thought it was just as good, if not better than the original.

But the biggest reason this is the first show to watch on AMC+ is honestly simple: it’s the version of this universe that the platform actually has. AMC+ has leaned hard into “Fear” as a core part of its lineup, making multiple seasons available exclusively and using it as a centerpiece of its horror and thriller catalog. So, if you’re trying to understand what AMC+ brings to the table, this is the show that gives you the clearest answer. It’s big, it’s complete, and it’s exactly the kind of high-stakes, character-driven thriller the service is built around.

What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in “The Walking Dead”? This spin-off set in Los Angeles, following new characters as they face the beginning of the end of the world, will answer that question.

What is ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ about?

“Fear the Walking Dead” follows a blended family in Los Angeles as a mysterious outbreak begins to spread and society slowly starts to unravel. At first, it’s just strange behavior, scattered reports, and a growing sense that something isn’t right. But that uncertainty doesn’t last long. As the situation escalates, the family is forced to leave everything behind and figure out how to survive in a world that’s changing by the day. Over time, the story expands beyond just one group, pulling in new characters, new locations, and bigger conflicts, but at its core, it’s always about how far people are willing to go to protect themselves and the people they care about when the rules no longer apply.

Other must-stream thriller shows on AMC+

If “Fear the Walking Dead” pulls you in and you want to stay in that world a little longer, AMC+ has a few solid follow-ups. “The Walking Dead: Dead City” is the most direct continuation, taking familiar characters into a new, more contained and dangerous setting that leans even harder into tension. “Dark Winds” is a slower, more grounded thriller, built around a series of crimes on a Navajo reservation, with a really strong sense of atmosphere and character.

And then there’s “Interview with the Vampire,” which goes in a totally different direction but still delivers that dark, character-driven intensity, just with a more gothic, psychological edge.
