"True Detective" is the first thriller TV show to watch when you sign up for HBO Max.

Just signed up for HBO Max and want something dark, intense, and impossible to stop thinking about? I have your show. HBO Max has no shortage of thrillers, but the one show that defines what the platform does best in this space is “True Detective.” It’s an anthology crime series, with the epic first season delivering eight hours of Southern Gothic dread that burrows into your brain and refuses to leave.

Season 1 alone is enough to justify your subscription, and when the show comes roaring back with “Night Country” (Season 4), it proves it still has real bite. For me, it’s the clearest example of what HBO Max does better than almost anyone when it comes to thrillers. Here’s why “True Detective” is the first thriller TV series you should watch when you sign up for HBO Max.

Why ‘True Detective’ is the must-watch thriller on HBO Max

The first season of “True Detective” is a masterclass in storytelling. Season 1 follows two Louisiana detectives, Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), chasing a ritualistic murder case that stretches across 17 years. The plot jumps between timelines and slowly peels back layers of corruption. It’s a crime story, sure, but it’s also about obsession, guilt, ego, faith, and the way time messes with your head. And because it’s an anthology, you get a complete, self-contained story in one season. Some people may not love that, but I really think the greatest shows end before they’re forced to create space-filler episodes that add nothing to the story (looking at you “Breaking Bad).”

Like all great thrillers, the tension in “True Detective” is unreal. Season 1 is heavy and philosophical, but it’s never boring. You’re constantly leaning forward, trying to piece things together. There’s cult imagery, weird symbols, creepy backwoods churches, and enough “what the hell is actually going on?” energy to keep you fully invested. And while Seasons 2 and 3 are solid on their own, they don’t quite hit the same lightning-in-a-bottle intensity. Then the show comes back swinging with Season 4, “Night Country,” which moves the story to frozen Alaska and somehow makes everything feel even colder, scarier, and more claustrophobic. It’s a serious return to form for the series.

Then there are the performances, which honestly feel like movie-level. Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle is one of those TV performances people still quote years later. The haunted stare. The nihilistic monologues. The whole “time is a flat circle” thing. Woody Harrelson plays the perfect counterweight, bringing messy, emotional heat to balance Rust’s detached worldview. Their chemistry is electric. And in “Night Country,” Jodie Foster steps in and immediately commands the screen. She plays Liz Danvers with this icy, exhausted intensity that makes you believe she’s been carrying the weight of that Alaskan darkness for years. Kali Reis matches her beat for beat, and it’s two performances that I’m still thinking about years later.

Finally, this show just looks incredible. Season 1’s Louisiana swamps feel humid and rotten and alive in a way most crime shows never even attempt. There’s a famous six-minute tracking shot that still gets talked about like it’s a sporting event highlight. Then “Night Country” flips the vibe completely. Endless darkness, mountains of snow, headlights cutting through black ice. It’s moody in the best way and scarier than I expected it to be (in a good way).

You also can’t underestimate what this series did for HBO as a whole. When Season 1 dropped, it was a full-on phenomenon. People were pausing episodes to Google clues. Theories were everywhere. It was the water cooler show of its time, and it actually helped define what modern HBO prestige looked like in the streaming era. Season 1 landed at a moment when HBO was proving it could still dominate the “event TV” conversation, and it reminded everyone that this was the network where serious actors came to do serious work. In a sea of detective shows across every streamer imaginable, “True Detective” is the one that feels like capital-P Prestige, and that legacy carries straight into HBO Max’s value proposition today.

What is ‘True Detective’ about?

“True Detective” is an anthology crime thriller where each season follows a different set of detectives investigating one central case. Season 1 centers on Rust Cohle and Marty Hart as they hunt a ritualistic killer in Louisiana, with the story unfolding across two timelines, 1995 and 2012, as past mistakes and buried secrets slowly come back to the surface. The deeper they dig, the darker the world around them becomes.

Later seasons shift locations and casts, with “Night Country” bringing the story to Alaska, where a group of scientists mysteriously vanish during the polar night. At its core, the show isn’t just about solving crimes. It’s about the people chasing the truth, the psychological toll of that chase, and the uncomfortable idea that some mysteries don’t wrap up neatly.

Other must-stream thriller shows on HBO Max

If “True Detective” pulls you in and you want to keep that dark thriller streak going, HBO Max has some heavy hitters. “The Night Of” is a slow-burn crime drama that zeroes in on one murder case and shows how the justice system can grind a person down. “Mare of Easttown” gives you small-town murder with Kate Winslet delivering an all-time performance as a detective who’s barely holding it together. And “The Outsider” blends crime and supernatural horror in a way that feels totally aligned with the darker edges of “True Detective.”
