Bill Belichick and UNC football canceled in-season Hulu documentary
Bill Belichick and UNC football canceled in-season Hulu documentary
After a poor start to the 2025 college football season, Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels are telling Hulu to put away their cameras.
Depending on the reader, this news might be a disappointment or a relief to fans of the North Carolina Tar Heels. The school’s football team was set to become the subject of a documentary TV series covering its 2025 season, the first in the reign of new head coach and NFL legend Bill Belichick. That documentary has now been canceled, leaving the host streaming service Hulu to pick up the pieces.
Key Details:
- Shut it down: Hulu’s documentary series following the UNC Tar Heels season has been axed.
- Not the first one: A collaboration between UNC and HBO for a “Hard Knocks”-style series was also nixed earlier this year.
- Poor showing: The death of the documentary likely has much to do with the Tar Heels’ poor on-field start.
Inside Carolina was the first to report that Hulu’s documentary series following the UNC football team would not be moving forward after all. It’s unlikely that the decision-makers at Hulu are happy about the decision, considering the streamer is now the second to be burned by trying to create such a project with the team.
UNC had been in the planning stages of a “Hard Knocks“-type show with HBO, which would have streamed on HBO Max. But that series was also scrapped, and reports after the fact said that HBO wasn’t comfortable with the role that Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, was to have in the production.
Per ESPN reporting, Hudson was due to be involved with the Hulu series as well, as pointed out by internal production memos. But in reality, the canceling of the series likely has more to do with the Tar Heels’ poor performance on the field to start the season.
After promising to transform the Tar Heels into the 33rd NFL team, Belichick has led them to a 2-3 start in which they’ve been outscored by Power Four opponents by a combined score of 120-33. The former New England Patriots coach has raised plenty of eyebrows with his decisions on how the team would be run since taking control, and the cancellation of this documentary isn’t likely to quiet the chatter.
Are you a UNC fan who was looking forward to the documentary? Or are you glad that this so-far inglorious season won’t be put on TV? Let us know in the comments how you feel about the Hulu show being canceled.
