Verizon to shut down +play, move streaming deals to other programs
Verizion customers will still be able to sign up for streaming subscriptions through select plans, but the +play store is going out of business.
+play, we hardly knew ye. Verizon first launched the +play platform in 2022 as a way to let its customers shop for streaming services and other subscriptions that could be added onto their mobile plan. While partnerships with streaming services remain an important aspect of the service Verizon provides, the +play store is no longer in the company’s long-term plans.
Key Details:
- Turn out the lights: +play will stop taking new subscription enrollments on July 9.
- Streamers still available: Customers can still get streaming subscriptions through select Verizon services.
- A good alternative: T-Mobile also offers great access to streamers in select plans.
Verizon customers don’t have much time left to wish +play a fond farewell. A note on the company’s website says that +play will stop taking new enrollments on July 9, three weeks after the announcement that the platform is bidding adieu.
The company confirmed the shutdown of +play in a statement sent to The Streamable:
Verizon is committed to providing the best value, choice and experience for customers. We’ve evolved our +play platform via the creation of myPlan and myHome, which takes the top entertainment platforms and makes them available at exclusive savings to our mobile and home customers in a simple and easy-to-manage construct. Today, over half of our mobile customers are on myPlan. myPlan and myHome provide the easiest path to the content and entertainment services that our customers want most.
As described by Verizon, customers will still be able to sign up for streaming subscriptions through the myPlan and myHome services, but the simple convenience offered by +play in aggregating a viewer’s top streaming subscriptions all in the same place is now gone. The carrier’s myPlan and myHome are benefit packages associated with either a mobile phone or home internet subscription with the company.
Customers could find a wide range of streamers in the +play store, including Netflix, Disney+, Max, and other top services. The company would also offer incredible deals on +play from time to time, such as a full year of Netflix free with the purchase of a Peacock annual plan.
Those who enjoyed the convenience of +play and are now considering switching mobile providers as a result of its loss might want to check out T-Mobile instead. T-Mobile offers free streaming subscriptions on a variety of plans, and could be a good alternative for streaming lovers who are displeased at the loss of +play.
