Warner Bros. Discovery sets 2027 release for ‘Gremlins 3’
The movie has lined up Steven Spielberg as executive producer, and Chris Columbus to direct and produce.
Warner Bros. Discovery reported its third quarter earnings on Thursday, and as part his conference call with analysts to discuss the report, company CEO David Zaslav revealed that WBD was revisiting a franchise that first originated more than 40 years ago. Zaslav confirmed that “Gremlins 3” was officially in the works, though what state Warner Bros. Discovery will be in by the film’s targeted 2027 release date is difficult to predict at the moment.
Key Details:
- Still years away: “Gremlins 3” will be released in Nov. 2027.
- Big names attached: Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus have been attached to the film.
- Who’ll own it?: WBD is fielding purchase offers, and Comcast may be preparing a serious bid.
Per Zaslav, “Gremlins 3” is currently on the WBD release calendar for Nov. 19. 2027. There aren’t any plot details available about the movie yet, but it has attracted some big names: Steven Spielberg will serve as executive producer for “Gremlins 3,” and Chris Columbus will both write and produce.
Columbus wrote the original “Gremlins” movie, which was also executive-produced by Spielberg. Now, the pair return to the franchise 41 years after the first film was released in theaters. The franchise centers on a species of furry critters called Mogwai, who are adorable as long as people follow certain rules around them. Once those rules are broken, all hell breaks loose.
Normally, it would be easy to predict where “Gremlins 3” will stream when it becomes available on demand. As a WBD picture, the movie would normally head to HBO Max first without question. But WBD’s future is highly unsettled at the moment, and it’s hard to say who will own the company by the “Gremlins 3” 2027 release window.
WBD is fielding merger and acquisition offers currently, with Paramount Skydance having made several offers. Netflix has reportedly explored a purchase of WBD’s streaming and studio assets, and on Thursday, multiple reports indicated that Comcast had hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to explore a bid for the same portion of the company.
It’s hard to say which — if any — of these companies will be successful in acquiring WBD assets before 2027. But if they are, there may be major changes to the streaming fate of “Gremlins 3,” or even a change on whether or not the film will be released at all. As of now, however, the plan is to put “Gremlins 3” into theaters in November 2027.
