What are Hulu’s password-sharing restrictions?
Sharing accounts is prohibited by Hulu, but how far will it go to stop you from doing so?
There sure are a lot of ways to get your hands on Hulu these days. The streamer is available as a standalone subscription and can also be added through various groupings of the Disney Bundle. Hulu is also offered as a free add-on with several live TV streaming plans, including some offered by DIRECTV, and of course Hulu + Live TV.
But if you have a Hulu subscription through one of these various methods, are you allowed to share it outside your home? We examine what Hulu has to say about it here, and what the streamer will actually do if it suspects you of sharing your account.
Everything you need to know about password sharing on Hulu
What is Hulu’s official password-sharing policy?
Not only is sharing your account against Hulu’s terms of use, the streamer dedicates a whole page in its Help Center to the topic of sharing accounts. At no point in the text of that article does the streamer leave any ambiguity regarding its policy.
“Hulu cannot be shared outside of your Household. A Household is a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there. People outside of your Household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Hulu, or can be added on as an Extra Member,” the page says.
Does Hulu strictly enforce its password-sharing rules?
At the moment, there don’t appear to be any customer reports of users who say they’ve been warned about losing access to their accounts for sharing login information. Similarly, Hulu doesn’t seem to be prompting viewers who log into someone else’s Hulu subscription to sign up for their own account — yet.
It’s clear that Hulu is tracking the location and trusted devices of account holders, however. The streamer does email account owners informing them of logins in new locations or on new devices, signaling that the streamer could make greater efforts to arrest password sharing if it wished.
Will Hulu enforce password sharing more strictly in the future?
At the moment, it appears there won’t even be a Hulu app for much longer. Disney is fully integrating Hulu into Disney+ in 2026, and the standalone Hulu app probably won’t last for long after that happens. If that’s the case, there probably isn’t much call to tighten the screws on the sharing of passwords for the Hulu app.
