What Are the Top 7 Movies Available on Max?

Lord of the Rings Trilogy

The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest fantasy epics ever put on film.

Some may consider this cheating a bit since it encompasses three movies, but since J.R.R. Tolkien always intended his “Lord of the Rings” books to be read as a single story, I’m taking inspiration from him. The “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy is still one of the greatest cinematic accomplishments ever produced, and fans can choose to watch the theatrical or extended versions of the movies on Max.

“The Lord of the Rings” tells the story of Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit with a magic ring that is in fact the key to the Dark Lord Sauron’s power. He undertakes an epic journey to destroy the Ring, aided by elves, dwarves, men, and other companions.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is the best of Chris Nolan and Christian Bale's Batman films.

There’s a wide range of Batman titles available on Max, but this one still stands out conspicuously. “The Dark Knight” is the second in the series of three Batman movies made by director Christopher Nolan, and is widely acknowledged as the best, in large part thanks to the posthumous Oscar-winning performance of Heath Ledger as the movie’s villain, The Joker.

“The Dark Knight” tells the continuing story of Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who spends his nights pummeling Gotham’s criminals using his vigilante Batman persona. But when The Joker begins to terrorize the city, Batman must decide how far his personal code of ethics can be strained against a man with no moral limitations.

Casablanca

Casablanca is a cinematic masterpiece, and stands the test of time.

Many still consider this movie to be Humphrey Bogart’s greatest turn on the silver screen, with good reason. The film collected accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, and more at the 16th Academy Awards in 1944, and remains a beloved classic 80 years later.

Casablanca” is set in Morocco in 1941, as World War II rips across the globe. A cynical American living in Casablanca meets a former lover devoted to the Allied cause and realizes there may be some things in life worth fighting for after all.

Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai has inspired countless other directors since its release in 1954.

The legendary Akira Kurosawa is one of the best-reviewed movies of all time and inspired countless other titles over the years. George Lucas specifically cited “Seven Samurai” and other Kurosawa movies for helping to create the Star Wars universe, and he’s just one example of a director who borrowed heavily from Kurosawa’s techniques in the following decades.

“Seven Samurai” tells the tale of a small village plagued by bandits who reach out to a samurai for protection. He assembles a group of six others to help the villagers learn to defend themselves, while the thankful villagers provide a home for their rescuers.

Lady Bird

There’s still a large segment of the audience who feels “Lady Bird” was robbed at the 2018 Academy Awards. Despite being nominated in five categories, the movie took away zero awards, depriving Laurie Metcalf, Saoirse Ronan, and director Greta Gerwig of accolades many felt they richly deserved.

“Lady Bird” is an emotional, intimate portrayal of the relationship between mother and daughter. It focuses on a young woman named Christine who has a turbulent relationship with her mom Marion. Christine wants to go off to college and pursue her dreams, but she has some unresolved feelings about her upbringing to sort through before she can really mature.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz continues to capture the imaginations of audiences even 85 years after its release.

To call “The Wizard of Oz” a classic is a massive understatement. The 1939 film starring Judy Garland is nothing less than an American cultural touchstone, one that has continued to capture the imagination of viewers more than 80 years after its initial release.

“The Wizard of Oz” is the fantastical tale of Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas who is whisked away to the merry old land of Oz. With a growing group of friends, Dorothy must secure help from the mysterious Wizard of Oz and avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West to find her way back home again.

Spirited Away

Spirited Away is just one of a huge number of Miyazaki movies available on Max.

It’s hard to choose between the various Hayao Miyazaki movies that are available on Max because all of them are highly regarded by audiences and critics alike. But “Spirited Away” is a personal favorite of mine and a good way to introduce oneself to the unique and often revolutionary storytelling methods used by Miyazaki.

“Spirited Away” focuses on young Chihiro Ogino, who stumbles on an enormous enchanted bathhouse while on an adventure with her parents. The magic of the place traps her there, and she continues to try and find a way to escape while getting to know the various spirits that inhabit or visit the place.
