Tom Hanks narrates this new, stunning event that takes viewers through the history of life on Earth.
Summer is a time of renewal, a time of growth when life is supposed to flourish. But summers on Earth can also be a time of harsh conditions, especially as climate change raises temperatures and changes weather conditions that are so crucial for the continuation of life.
There’s no doubt that the Earth has seen its share of ecological disasters in its billions of years. Many of its most catastrophic events have also led to the growth of new life, and that’s exactly what the new nature documentary series “Surviving Earth” will explore. It’s the title I’m most excited to stream this week, and not just because there are dinosaurs involved.
“Surviving Earth” is a prehistoric documentary series that transports viewers back in time 450 million years. It takes viewers through various stages of life on Earth, and shows how life managed to carry on through some of the most devastating environmental crises in the planet’s history.
Using CGI to recreate creatures that have been gone for millions of years, the show will take viewers around the globe to explore the resilience of life in the face of catastrophe. Viewers will get to see familiar animals like dinosaurs and sabertooth tigers, and will also explore environments they may not be as familiar with.
I’m most excited for the series because it will offer a view of the world that nature documentaries so rarely focus on. Audiences will get to see that life, while fragile, is also incredibly adaptable to even the harshest global conditions.
That will surely come as a comfort to many who are concerned about the impacts of climate change. The show may focus on a time long past in Earth’s history, but its lessons about the irrepressible nature of life are timeless.
That isn’t to say the show’s message will ignore the threat of climate change — on the contrary, it will highlight the extraordinary journey that every living creature on the planet has taken to get to this point, including humanity. Why throw all that work away in the name of apathy?
“Surviving Earth” will premiere on NBC on Thursday, June 11, at 8 p.m. ET. New episodes will debut each Thursday at the same time, and will stream on Peacock the day after they air live on traditional TV. The show is eight episodes in duration, with the finale set to stream on July 30.
