What is your favorite episode of ‘The Last of Us’?
There are only two season thus far, but some episodes are already classics.
Having never played the video game on which the hit series “The Last of Us” is based, I wasn’t sure if I’d be into it when it premiered in 2023. The hype was real, though, mostly from gamers who had played the series and were extremely excited to see it on screen. It didn’t take long to reel me in, though, as barely halfway through the first episode, I was completely hooked. Beware if you haven’t watched the series on Max — spoilers are within!
What makes “The Last of Us” so compelling isn’t just the post-apocalyptic backdrop or the suspense of infected lurking around every corner — it’s the relationship of Joel and Ellie, brought to life by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. I was so roped into their travels and what was to come. Constantly worrying about Ellie and what danger was in store as they made their way along the barren landscape.
With Season 2 having just come to another cliff-hanging close, it’s almost hard to believe there have only been 16 episodes in total: nine in the first season, and seven in the second. And yet, even with so few, several episodes already feel iconic, even worthy of being mentioned among the best TV episodes of all time. Whether it’s the devastating flashbacks, the intense action sequences, or the quiet, emotionally charged moments between characters, each episode feels meticulously crafted.
Long, Long Time
For me, the one episode that stands out from the rest happened early in the first season. Just three episodes in — “Long, Long Time” was an emotional journey that, for a moment, took us away from Joel and Ellie and focused on two new characters. It’s also nearly impossible not to be immediately drawn into their story. The episode was the epitome of an emotional roller coaster, and for me, it is one of the best episodes of all time, for any show.
