One of the most popular media franchises of all time is getting a new adaptation. The “Harry Potter” novels have already been turned into a beloved movie series, but Warner Bros. The company is developing a “Harry Potter” television series that will air on HBO and its companion streaming service Max, and we’ll run through all the details we have about the show so far here!

Everything you need to know about the “Harry Potter” TV series

When will the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series be released?

Casting for the show is still ongoing, so the best bet for a release date is late 2026 or early 2027. The show is intended to run over the course of a decade, as currently planned.

Will the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series follow the books closely?

One of the biggest complaints about the “Harry Potter” movie series is how frequently later films took liberties with their source material. However, when the TV series was first announced, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys said the series would be a “faithful adaptation” of the novels, and that the show would “dive deep into each of the iconic books.”

The TV series format will certainly give the show more time to delve into the novels, as it will allow each book to be explored over the course of 10 hours or more of screen time, as opposed to movies which are limited to around two hours in length.

Who will star in the new ‘Harry Potter’ show?

There have been no official casting announcements yet, only rumors and whispers. The most concrete of these rumors is an exclusive report from Deadline in February 2025 which stated John Lithgow was closing in on a deal to play Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. HBO declined to comment on the rumor, but at this point, it would be surprising if another actor were cast in the role.

Additional rumors have included Paapa Essiedu being considered for Severus Snape Snape, Brett Goldstein as Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy as Lord Voldemort, and Sharon Horgan or Lesley Manville for Professor Minerva McGonagall. None of these roles have been officially cast as yet.

Deadline also reports that more than 32,000 children have sent in audition tapes to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione. That casting process is still progressing.

Will ‘Harry Potter’ be on HBO and Max?

Yes, “Harry Potter” will air on the linear HBO channel and stream on the Max streaming service simultaneously. Unless fans hear to the contrary, it’s safe to assume that episodes of the show will debut on Max at the same time that they air on HBO.

Will ‘Harry Potter’ stream for free?

“Harry Potter” is destined to be one of the biggest and most popular TV projects of the last 50 years. HBO may decide to air an episode of the series free somewhere, but otherwise, there will almost certainly be no way to watch the series free when it is released.
