Need something to watch next on Hulu? Try these shows and movies
Halloween is coming, football is back, and Hulu has a very good mix of new stuff to stream.
I love Hulu. I think it’s home to the best new show of the year (you’ll have to read on to see which one that is), along with one of my favorite (deranged) comedies of all time. Not only do you get Hulu original series on the platform, along with FX shows, but you’ll find real movies (movie theater movies!) from both 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures. All of that adds up to my wife and me being longtime subscribers. So, if you’re a Hulu fan, or just wondering what there is to watch, here are my picks for what to watch next.
What to watch next on Hulu:
‘Furious’ | TV Series | Crime thriller

For a while, “Furious” was the best show on streaming no one was talking about. So much so that I wrote about how seriously underrated it is on Hulu. Good news: I don’t think it’s underrated anymore because it’s finally getting the love it deserves! And I’ll continue to give it love because it’s the best show my wife and I have watched this year.
From creator Elizabeth Meriwether (yes, the genius behind “New Girl”), the crime thriller follows Alice, an FBI agent played by Emmy Rossum, as she tries to track down Catherine, a female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew. It sounds like a standard cat-and-mouse cop drama, but it’s not. It’s much weirder, funnier, and perhaps most importantly, very morally ambiguous. Once you see what’s really happening, your allegiance will be bouncing back and forth between Alice and Catherine, twisting your emotions into a knot. Fair warning: it can get pretty dark and unsettling, especially if you’re sensitive to sex crimes. But if you can stomach it, “Furious” is the show on Hulu you simply have to watch.
Furious
FBI agent Alice Black is on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer. Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.
‘American Horror Story’ | TV Series | Horror drama

Unlucky Season 13 was always going to be big for “American Horror Story,” and it looks like the horror anthology is pulling out all the stops. The new season follows Ben DeSoto, a hospice worker who survives a near-death experience and takes a job caring for a mysterious elderly man in a creepy New York penthouse. As you’d expect, the number 13 keeps popping up, something much bigger and supernatural seems to be happening, and characters from past seasons start getting pulled into the same story. Instead of starting completely fresh, the season brings together pieces of “Murder House,” “Coven,” “Hotel,” “Cult,” and more into one big crossover mystery.
If you’ve ever craved a greatest-hits version of AHS, this is as close as you’re going to get. New episodes are rolling out throughout October, with the final episode (13!) dropping Thursday, Oct. 29. If you want something creepy to settle into for the entire month, this is your next watch on Hulu.
American Horror Story
An anthology horror drama series centering on different characters and locations, including a house with a murderous past, an asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, a hotel, a farmhouse in Roanoke, a cult, the apocalypse and a summer camp.
‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ | TV Series | Comedy

Just when you thought “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” couldn’t get more unhinged, the team drops Season 18. This is one of my favorite comedies ever, and even I’m impressed at how far they go.
So far this season, Frank marries a dead bride, the gang decides living in a homeless encampment is really the best way to live (Dee ends up on fentanyl), they crash a Renaissance fair and a McPoyle twin loses an eye, and the gang tries to figure out why no one is drinking alcohol anymore. You probably already know if this is your kind of comedy or not, so I can’t convince you. But if you felt like maybe the gang’s story was over, let me tell you it’s not. It’s wilder.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Four egocentric friends run a neighborhood Irish pub in Philadelphia and try to find their way through the adult world of work and relationships. Unfortunately, their warped views and precarious judgments often lead them to trouble, creating a myriad of uncomfortable situations that usually only get worse before they get better.
‘Chad Powers’ | TV Series | Comedy

With football season well underway, it’s time for one of your favorite (disgraced) college athletes to pick up the pigskin. “Chad Powers” is back with Season 2, as Glen Powell plays both Russ Holliday and Chad Powers — who is as weird as ever.
And Season 2 really works. Now that the premise is set, the show is freed up to be stranger and more fun. It jumps genres regularly, bouncing between sports comedy, rom-com, and a thriller vibe as people start to get wise to Holliday’s scheme. But really, this is about Russ learning to be less of a selfish a-hole, and that brings some heart underneath all the chaos. Because maybe, just maybe, he can be a half-decent guy.
Chad Powers
Eight years after an unforgivable mistake nukes his promising college football career, hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday tries to resurrect his dreams by disguising himself as Chad Powers - a talented oddball who walks on to the struggling South Georgia Catfish.
‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ | Movie | Dramedy

If you’ve written off “The Devil Wears Prada 2” as a cash grab, let me assure you it’s not. Tara and I watched it as soon as it landed on Hulu, and both of us were pleasantly surprised. Yes, it hands you all the nostalgia you want if you’re a fan of the first movie. But it also stands on its own, telling a tight, modern story about a famous magazine brand trying to adapt to a digital landscape.
Anne Hathaway is back as Andy Sachs — this time a little older and more confident. Naturally, Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly tries to treat her like the young woman she remembers (or doesn’t remember, as the case may be), which carries a lot of the comedy. That, and Simone Ashley acting as the political correctness police for Miranda, whispering “can’t say that” anytime Miranda crosses the line. And I really liked Nigel’s (Stanley Tucci) arc as the ever-faithful (if underappreciated) second-in-command that cleanly pays off a storyline set up in the first film. Oh, and Emily Blunt is hilarious. So come for the nostalgia if you like, but stay for the great movie — which is not something most sequels can say.
The Devil Wears Prada 2
Andy Sachs returns to Runway as Miranda Priestly navigates a new media landscape and Runway’s position within. The duo reconnect with former assistant Emily Charlton, now the head of a luxury brand that possesses funding which could ensure Runway’s survival.
‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’ | Movie | Horror thriller

Speaking of sequels that kill, here’s my Halloween choice: “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.” I saw this one in theaters with Tara because we both loved the original, and this one is bigger, better, wackier, and all around MORE in the best way. It’s exactly the tone I love, which is spooky, gory, and funny without being downright nightmare fuel, all while being fully aware of how insane it is.
The movie picks up with Grace (Samara Weaving) moments after she barely survives the first movie… only to get dragged into an even bigger battle that involves even more families trying to kill her. But the real difference is Kathryn Newton, who joins the madness as Grace’s estranged sister and also has to survive this nightmare. That gives it this great sister-buddy-comedy vibe with a great emotional undertow that makes you actually care about these women. Oh, if you’re hoping there will be more exploding bodies… fear not. There’s plenty!
Ready or Not: Here I Come
Moments after surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, Grace discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.
