When Will You Be Able to Stream Hugh Grant’s ‘Heretic’ at Home?
The buzzy horror film is expected to be big at the box office this weekend.
Be careful when knocking on a stranger’s door. That’s the cautionary premise behind the new A24 thriller “Heretic,” which makes its official theatrical debut on Friday, Nov. 8. It’s likely to be a highly popular theatrical film, but when will it come to streaming on demand?
Key Details:
- “Heretic” has received sterling reviews from critics thus far.
- As an A24 movie, “Heretic” will stream on Max when it’s ready to go on-demand.
- Recent A24 releases suggest a theatrical window of at least 100 days for “Heretic.”
Watch the Trailer for “Heretic”:
“Heretic” tells the story of two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton. In the course of their mission work, they knock on the door of a Mr. Reed, a seemingly kind but reclusive man. Upon entering his house, however, they quickly become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse, and learn that Mr. Reed is nothing like the man he seems to be.
Reviewers are smitten with “Heretic,” which currently sports a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have special praise for the performance of Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed, as well as the film’s ability to rely on dialogue instead of non-stop, gory set pieces.
When Will ‘Heretic’ Stream at Home?
Because of the Pay 1 deal agreed to between Warner Bros. Discovery and A24 in December 2023, it’s easy to say which streaming service will get “Heretic” once the movie finishes its period of exclusivity in theaters and on paid rental and purchase streaming platforms like Prime Video and Vudu. WBD’s streamer Max will host the movie when it’s ready to stream with a subscription.
Recent history suggests, however, that it will be more than 100 days before “Heretic” comes out on Max. Three A24 releases this year had longer windows than that; “Love Lies Bleeding” took 133 days to stream on Max, while “Civil War” took 154 days and “MaXXXine” took 105 days to arrive on the streamer after their initial releases.
I’ll try to come down somewhere in the middle with my prediction, and say that “Heretic” will arrive on Max on Friday, March 14, 2025. That would fit in the pattern of other recent A24 releases, ensuring that the studio gets to maximize its theatrical and premium video-on-demand (PVOD) windows before letting the movie stream on-demand with a Max subscription.
