- Roadside films usually take an extended trip through theaters, so it could be a while before “My Penguin Friend” streams on Hulu.
Watch the Trailer for ‘My Penguin Friend’
“My Penguin Friend” stars Jean Reno as João Perei de Souza, a Brazilian fisherman who happens upon a penguin in the water one day. Covered in oil from a nearby spill, the penguin is in bad shape, and de Souza pulls him from the water to try to rehabilitate him. The pair quickly form a bond that no one expected, and each demonstrates the power to change the other’s life in incredible ways.
Thus far, 67% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the movie a thumbs up. There’s more than just cutesy-ness at play here, according to critics, who cite a strong emotional story that respects the dignity of both animals and humans as reason to see the film.
When is ‘My Penguin Friend’ Coming to Streaming?
“My Penguin Friend” is being distributed by Roadside Attractions in the United States. That means that unless the studio gets an overwhelming offer from another streamer to become the film’s first destination, it will head to Hulu to stream on-demand once it’s done with a window of exclusivity in theaters and on premium digital purchase and rental platforms such as Prime Video.
Roadside films usually take a while to head to streaming, which is typical for studios that don’t have streaming services themselves and want to maximize ticket sales and revenue brought in from pre-streaming release rentals. The most recent Roadside movies to hit Hulu were “Scrambled,” which hit Hulu on July 12, 161 days after its release; and “Accidental Texan,” which will also arrive on Hulu 161 days after its theatrical debut when it becomes available to stream Aug. 16.
I think “My Penguin Friend” will arrive on Hulu 162 days after its theatrical release, so that it can become available on the streamer on a Friday, following the pattern of the last two films. That would fix its premiere date on Hulu as Friday, Jan. 24, giving American audiences the perfect way to warm their hearts despite the likely cold weather outside.
