Picture quality is obviously incredibly important when watching TV and movies via streaming, but it’s also critical for viewers not to overlook sound quality. Poor sound while watching an explosive Marvel or Star Wars title on Disney+, for example, could completely ruin that title for the viewer.

The good news is that Disney+ offers a variety of premium audio formats to viewers, so that subscribers with compatible devices can take their watching experience to the best level possible. Find out how to use these audio formats on Disney+, and which are available here!

What you need to know about premium audio formats on Disney+

Which premium audio formats are available on Disney+?

Disney+ offers what it calls a “growing library” of shows and movies in 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos for viewers to enjoy. Most of the streamer’s new releases and originals offer these formats, and efforts to expand them to its catalog are going on all the time.

Additionally, Disney+ is one of the only streaming services that offers IMAX Enhanced sound with DTS on select Android TV devices and audio components that support DTS. This format is only available on IMAX Enhanced titles on Disney+.

Lastly, Apple’s Spatial Audio is available when watching select Disney+ titles on the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Can all plans use premium audio formats on Disney+?

No — at least, not all Disney+ plans can use all premium audio options. Disney+ Basic (with ads) subscribers are not able to watch any titles in Dolby Atmos or IMAX Enhanced Sound.

How can you turn on premium audio on Disney+?

Good news on this front — you don’t have to do anything at all to get a premium audio experience with Disney+. The streamer’s app will automatically detect the highest quality audio your device can support, with the exception of externally connected audio systems or soundbars.

How to tell if a title supports premium audio on Disney+

To check and see if the show or movie you want to watch on Disney+ has premium audio formats available, go to the title’s details page and click the Details tab. From here, you can see all the premium audio and visual formats available with that video.
