The Oscars go to… YouTube starting in 2029!
The Academy Awards will be departing from ABC and other Disney platforms in favor of the free streaming platform.
This time of year isn’t typically known for splashy announcements in the media world, but YouTube is bucking that trend. As it was announced on Wednesday that the streaming giant has acquired the rights to stream the Academy Awards starting in 2029, swiping the Oscars away from Disney platforms to offer them for free.
Key Details:
- The winner is…: The Oscars will begin streaming on YouTube in 2029.
- Other exclusives: The Oscars YouTube channel will stream the award nomination announcement show, the Governors Awards, and more.
- Writing on the wall: Reporting from earlier this year indicated the Academy was looking for a new broadcast partner for the ceremony.
New customers can save $15 per month for 5 months.
Wednesday’s announcement revealed that YouTube would stream the Oscars globally starting in 2029, in a deal that would continue through 2033. Fans will be able to see red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes content, and more during the annual Oscars telecast on YouTube once the partnership begins.
The deal will also see the Oscars Nominations Announcement, the Governors Awards, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, the Student Academy Awards, the Scientific and Technical Awards, and much more stream exclusively on the Oscars YouTube channel. The agreement marks a huge shift for the Oscars telecast, which hasn’t been broadcast on a channel other than ABC since 1976.
“We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said. “We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.”
The streaming history of the Oscars has been a surprisingly brief and unceremonious one. The ceremony didn't stream on Disney+ in the United States, as it did in other countries in 2023. And when Hulu tried its hand at streaming the awards in 2025, the result was a disaster.
“The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said. “Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”
Reports arose in early 2025 that the Academy was looking to increase both the fees it collects for the Oscars telecast and the audience for the ceremony. Once its deal with YouTube begins, it will have access to essentially all viewers with an internet connection.

This plan includes local channels 32 of the top 35 cable channels, and regional sports networks (RSNs) in select markets. The base plan includes more than 100 live channels, including major broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, as well as popular cable channels such as ESPN, CNN, FX, USA Network, and TNT. Local channels are included in most markets, making YouTube TV a full replacement for traditional cable for many viewers.
