YouTube TV hiking subscription prices in January; how much more will it cost?
The service was the last amongst live TV streamers to keep its base price below $75 per month.
If you’ve been keeping track of The Streamable's Streamflation guide this year, you know that nearly every service on the market has raised its prices at some point during 2024. The live TV streaming service YouTube TV was one of the last holdouts, but now it too has announced that it will raise prices in the coming weeks, an effort to keep its subscription revenue per user high in the midst of rising programming costs.
Key Details:
- YouTube TV’s base package is increasing from $73 per month to $83.
- New and existing customers will see the increase go into effect on Jan. 13.
- The new cost matches the base price of a Hulu + Live TV subscription and is equivalent to a DIRECTV STREAM package.
YouTube TV announced to customers via email that it would be raising its subscription prices by $10 per month, from $73 to $83 for its base channel package starting in January. The increase will go into effect immediately for new customers and on Jan. 13 for current subscribers who will see it reflected on their next bill after that date.
“We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we realize this has an impact on our members,” the YouTube TV email told customers. “We are committed to bringing you features that are changing the way we watch live TV, like unlimited DVR storage and multiview, and supporting YouTube TV’s breadth of content and vast on-demand library of movies and shows.”
Customers who signed up for YouTube TV with a discount, such as the $20-per-month off for four months deal the streamer offered at the beginning of football season, those promotional prices will stay in effect until the deal period ends.
The price increase puts YouTube TV more or less on par with its competitors in live TV streaming. DIRECTV STREAM last raised prices in October, with its base ENTERTAINMENT package now costing $87 per month. Hulu + Live TV also bumped its subscription rate to $83 per month in October, but still includes free access to the Disney Bundle at that price.
Fubo is the only live TV service bucking the trend of late. The service recently launched a new channel package for $80 per month, one which includes a selection of 90+ top cable channels but doesn’t include regional sports networks or the mandatory associated fee that comes with the streamer’s other plans.
YouTube TV
YouTube TV is a live TV streaming service with more than 60 channels for $82.99/month. This plan includes local channels, 32 of the top 35 cable channels, and regional sports networks (RSNs) in select markets. The service includes an unlimited DVR. The Streamable does not recommend YouTube TV. Consider DIRECTV STREAM for a better channel lineup or Hulu Live TV for its free Disney Bundle.
