If You Loved ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4, Make ‘Bad Sisters’ Your Next Dry-Comedy, Crime Binge

‘Bad Sisters’ has received rave reviews, and Apple TV+ subscribers won’t have to go far to find it.

Bad Sisters is an Irish dark comedy series available on Apple TV+.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, “Slow Horses” will wrap up its fourth season on Apple TV+. The show has already been renewed for a fifth, but even so, it will be a while before fans see new episodes after Wednesday’s Season 4 finale. The dry British humor and taught, tense writing of “Slow Horses” make it a must-see for Apple TV+ subscribers, but once you’re finished you may be feeling a little left out in the cold.

There’s no shortage of titles to turn to next on Apple TV+, but if you are looking for a show that will scratch your incessant Slough House-inspired itch, I do have one recommendation that might fit the bill; and it just so happens to be on the same streamer, so you don’t have to worry about signing up for a new service to watch it. After you wrap up Jackson Lamb and River Cartwright’s latest adventure, I recommend checking out the British comedy/mystery series “Bad Sisters.” While it doesn’t involve spies — competent or otherwise — it does involve murder, bumbling perpetrators and investigators, and dry U.K. humor.

About ‘Bad Sisters’

The dry wit and mystery-style story are two reasons "Slow Horses" fans will love "Bad Sisters."

Brought to life by Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, and Brett Baer, “Bad Sisters” is a black comedy series set in Dublin, Ireland. It centers on the five Garvey sisters, one of whom is married to an abusive and controlling husband. When he unexpectedly dies, the Garveys find themselves at the center of a life insurance investigation, and as viewers learn more, they come to find that perhaps the family isn’t as free of involvement in his passing as they’d like observers to believe.

Watch the Trailer for ‘Bad Sisters’:

There’s just one season of “Bad Sisters” available at the moment, though the second is due to hit Apple TV+ on Nov. 13, so you have just over one month to watch the first 10 episodes before Season 2 premieres. Critics have heaped praise on the show, with one reviewer comparing it to the compelling plotlines and characters in “Big Little Lies” with one major exception: “Bad Sisters” is also uproariously funny. The show expertly pulls viewers through timelines to show them, little by little, how the ridiculous murder scenario actually unfolded.

Make no mistake about it, despite the deadly serious consequences the show explores, it’s not afraid to make you laugh again and again. Star and writer Sharon Horgan has serious comedic chops, having earned her fame as a scribe with the 2006 British comedy series “Pulling” and winning a BAFTA award for the short film “Dreamland.” Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene, and Eve Hewson all bring serious comedy bona fides to the show as well, but can also answer the call when the show needs a more dramatic tone.

If you’re a lover of dry, British Isles humor mixed with a compelling and sometimes thrilling storyline, “Bad Sisters” is an incredibly worthy successor to “Slow Horses” in your streaming queue. Its 10-episode first season is available to stream on Apple TV+ now, and the second season will begin airing new episodes on Nov. 13.
