Can you turn off autoplay on Prime Video?

Prime Video may have a large library and a growing number of top sports games, but can you change autoplay settings on the streamer?

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

There’s no doubt that Prime Video ranges in importance for those who have access to the streamer. Anyone with an Amazon Prime membership has a subscription, and to some people, it’s little more than an added, seldom-used benefit. To others, however, it’s the home of their favorite streaming series, like “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” “The Boys,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” just to name a few.

There’s also the enormous rental and purchase library available on Prime Video, but once you’re using the service to actually watch a video, does it offer enough customization options? Specifically, will Prime Video let you adjust your autoplay settings, or will it force you to sit through trailers anytime you click onto a show’s detail page?

Can you turn off autoplay on Prime Video?

There are a few different answers to this question. On two devices, the answer is yes: mobile and on the Prime Video website. On the streamer’s smart TV app, I found a different dynamic at play — I could not turn off autoplay. I scoured through the settings on the Prime Video TV app — and I use an Amazon Fire TV — and nowhere did I find the ability to turn autoplay on or off. A Previews section in the Settings menu allows a viewer to mute previews or disable autoplay of live events and previews, but autoplay of trailers on show detail pages remained on.

Starting with the Prime Video website, you can go to your account profile icon in the top-right of the screen, then click Account & Settings. Click Player, and from that screen, you can adjust autoplay settings for trailers, as well as decide whether or not you want Prime Video to play the next episode automatically when watching a series.

This process is very similar on the Prime Video mobile app, and it’s a quick adjustment there. But on the streamer’s smart TV app, I found a different dynamic at play: I could not turn off autoplay. Adjusting the autoplay settings on my computer and mobile app did not cause a similar adjustment on the Prime Video smart TV app for me. I suppose it’s possible the answer is buried somewhere I didn’t think to look in the Prime Video interface, but I did not see any way to adjust the setting on that platform.
