My favorite movie of all time is on Netflix — but not for long
The entire Back to the Future trilogy is on Netflix for the month of November
Given that I’ve been a movie buff my entire life and spent 13 of those years working in a video store, choosing a favorite film within a specific genre can be a real challenge. Yet, I’ve been certain about one thing almost since the first time I saw it: “Back to the Future” is always my answer to the question, “What’s your favorite movie of all time?”. If you haven’t seen it — or want to watch it again for the umpteenth time — you can now catch the entire Back to the Future trilogy on Netflix before it leaves again on November 30th.
The brilliance of the 1985 classic lies in its pitch-perfect blend of comedy, adventure, and high-stakes science fiction. The movie introduces us to the ultimate unlikely duo: the charismatic teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and the eccentric, wild-haired scientist Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd), upon whom the entire story unfolds. When Marty accidentally uses Doc’s plutonium-powered DeLorean time machine to jump from 1985 to 1955, he faces a potential life-changing crisis: he must ensure his awkward teenage parents, George and Lorraine, fall in love at their high school dance — or he and his 1985 siblings will cease to exist. From the moment Marty lands in a vastly different version of his hometown, Hill Valley, the story unfolds into a truly unforgettable adventure with a simple yet high-concept premise.
What began as a single-time travel tale quickly expanded into one of cinema’s most beloved trilogies. The second film, “Back to the Future Part II” (1989), raises the stakes by sending Marty and Doc to the future year of October 21, 2015, complete with hoverboards and self-lacing sneakers, only to have their meddling create a dark, alternate 1985 that forces them back to the past. The final installment, “Back to the Future Part III” (1990), delivers a satisfying conclusion by stranding Doc in the Old West of 1885, requiring Marty to strap on his best cowboy getup and travel back in time for one final rescue. This seamless three-part journey is full of paradoxes and pure movie magic.
The enduring popularity of the series is clear, as the entire Back to the Future trilogy has just returned to Netflix for November. The timing is fantastic, as the franchise is intrinsically linked to this month. The climax of the original film centers around Marty’s attempt to harness the lightning strike on the Hill Valley clock tower on November 12, 1955, which sends him back to his own time. Furthermore, the second and third films frequently jump back to that crucial date in 1955, making November a perpetually fitting month to fire up the flux capacitor and revisit Hill Valley across the centuries.
Check out the entire series now on Netflix before it heads back in time once more on November 30th.
