Netflix mulls launch of new digital streaming store

Netflix mulls launch of new digital streaming store

Netflix is rolling out additional subtitle and dubbing options for viewers on TVs.

Is Netflix finally ready to play nice with the competition? For many years, the streamer has resisted collaborations and bundles with other streaming services, adopting an attitude of superiority so complete that it would never consider such team-ups. But the veneer is cracking; a new report indicates that Netflix is considering launching a digital store to distribute other streaming services, akin to the Prime Video Subscriptions hub and the YouTube TV Primetime Channels store.

Key Details:

  • Come shop: Netflix is mulling the launch of its own digital subscriptions store.
  • Stay here: Viewers would watch content from other streamers directly through the Netflix app if purchased through the store.
  • Strong viewership: Digital streaming stores can be a boon to their host platforms, as well as the services within.

The New York Times reports that Netflix executives have had recent discussions about making other streaming services available through its platform. The report specifically names Fox One, and Peacock as possibilities for such distribution, but other streamers like AMC+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and STARZ could also be candidates.

Viewers would subscribe to these services through Netflix, then watch the content unlocked with that subscription directly through the Netflix app. It would be a major play for greater engagement by Netflix, which has also reportedly considered adding live channels and taking other steps to increase time spent on its platform.

Engagement is the key metric streaming services are chasing these days. Platforms like Netflix not only want to be the reason viewers turn on their set, but ideally, to be the only app played in a given viewing session. Netflix already licenses content from every top studio in Hollywood, but making those studios’ streaming services available through the Netflix app would be a major step forward.

Audiences are responding well to one-app streaming hubs like the one Netflix is thinking about launching. Recent data from Antenna indicates that specialty streaming services with a particular content focus have benefited greatly from such platforms; the study shows that 67% of specialty streaming subscriptions are now billed through Prime Video, and that viewers are now purchasing these subscriptions at a faster rate.

Both sides can benefit from such arrangements. Member streamers get more customers, and host platforms get more engagement with their app. Netflix’s desire to stand alone may be about to give way to the circumstances of the current marketplace, and we’ll make sure to update you on any decisions from the streamer to launch a digital streaming store.
