The best streaming service for spy thriller TV shows? Here’s my top pick
Prime Video has everything from classic spy action to slow-burn psychological thrillers.
I’ve always liked spy shows, but I really fell in love with the genre in film school, thanks to a James Bond class I took. What started as a fun elective ended up pulling me into this whole world of secrets, gadgets, and double lives. Since then, I’ve been hooked — whether it’s sleek international thrillers or gritty undercover missions, there’s just something about the tension and style that keeps me coming back. And if you’re into spy stories like I am, Prime Video is the best place to stream them. Here’s why it’s my top choice for fans of spy and espionage thriller TV shows.

What spy and espionage TV shows can you watch on Prime Video?

Let’s start with the one that basically feels tailor-made for me. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is a spy thriller wrapped inside a rom-com, and as someone who loves both, it’s an easy win. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play two strangers thrown into a fake marriage as cover for their work as undercover operatives, and the setup is just as fun as it sounds.
Each episode tracks a different stage in their “relationship” — from awkward first dates to trust issues to full-blown chaos — and somehow, the emotional stakes hit just as hard as the action. The chemistry is off the charts, the humor lands, and the missions are packed with just enough danger to keep things tense. It’s romantic, unpredictable, and never takes itself too seriously, which is exactly the kind of spy show I can’t get enough of.
If you’re into thrillers that lean more military than espionage, “The Terminal List” is worth checking out. It’s not a classic spy story, but it’s packed with covert ops, government cover-ups, and plenty of high-stakes tension. Chris Pratt plays James Reece, a Navy SEAL whose team is ambushed—and as he digs into what went wrong, he uncovers a conspiracy that turns his whole world upside down. The vibe here is more tactical boots-on-the-ground than globe-trotting secret agent, but it still scratches that paranoid, shadowy-organization itch. If you like your thrillers intense, personal, and heavy on the action, this one definitely brings it.
Prime Video
Prime Video is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 10,000+ movies, TV shows, and Prime Originals like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Boys,” and more. Subscribers can also add third-party services like Max, Showtime, STARZ, and dozens more with Prime Video Channels. Prime Video also offers exclusive live access to NFL Thursday Night Football.

I’ll be honest — I’ve loved John Krasinski since “The Office,” so when I heard he was playing Jack Ryan, I was kinda like… really? Jim from Scranton is gonna take on terrorists? But credit where it’s due — “Jack Ryan” absolutely works. Krasinski not only sells the brainy analyst-turned-field-agent thing, but he’s legit convincing in the action scenes too, which is a testament to the work he put in to be physically ready.
The show itself is a globe-trotting thriller full of CIA conspiracies, political power plays, and edge-of-your-seat missions. And while it leans into the Tom Clancy seriousness, it never gets bogged down. It’s smart, tense, and surprisingly emotional at times. Plus, each season feels like its own mini movie — so you get a fresh threat and a new location without it getting stale.
“Hanna” wasn’t really on my radar until recently. It takes the whole spy thriller thing and adds a wild twist: it’s about a teenage girl who’s been raised off the grid to be a super-soldier. Yeah, it sounds a little out there, but the show makes it work. It’s got that sleek, European spy vibe, with tons of action and a surprising amount of heart.
Watching Hanna navigate the real world for the first time while dodging agents who want her dead is somehow both intense and emotional. The whole thing feels fresh and different, like “The Bourne Identity” meets a coming-of-age story, and that combo really hit for me. Definitely one of those hidden gems I wish I’d known about sooner.

For spy show fans who are looking for something a little lighter (in addition to “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) check out “Chuck.” It’s got that classic “everyman gets thrown into something way over his head” setup, and it totally works. Chuck’s just a regular dude working at a big-box tech store — until he accidentally downloads a bunch of government secrets into his brain. That’s the hook, and from there it turns into a mix of goofy workplace comedy and legit spy action.
The tone bounces between silly and suspenseful in a way that somehow makes both sides better. Plus, the cast is super charming, and the show never takes itself too seriously, even when the stakes get high. If you like your spy thrillers with a side of nerdy humor and heart, this is a great choice.
Next up is “Spooks,” which is the oldest show on this list. But don’t let that fool you — this one still hits. First off, yes, spooks is British slang for spies, and the show leans into that MI5 world hard. It’s all about the pressure-cooker environment of national security, and it doesn’t shy away from making bold, sometimes brutal choices.
What I love is how grounded it feels — no flashy gadgets or over-the-top villains, just smart, tense storytelling and characters constantly juggling loyalty, secrecy, and risk. If you like your spy thrillers more tactical and less Hollywood, this one delivers. And with a whopping 10 seasons, it’s a great binge for anyone who wants a deep dive into the kind of spy work that rarely makes the headlines.
Rounding things out, I’ve got two totally different spy shows that both deserve a shoutout. “Nikita” is pure, high-octane drama. It’s about a rogue assassin taking on the shady government agency that trained her, and it’s packed with sleek action, double-crosses, and plenty of juicy tension. It leans into the stylized side of the genre, but never feels over-the-top. On the flip side, “Patriot” is a dark comedy that’s as dry and deadpan as it is brilliant.
It follows an intelligence officer with a folk music hobby and a serious case of existential dread, and the show somehow balances absurd humor with genuinely gripping spy stakes. If you’re in the mood for action and attitude, “Nikita” delivers. But if you want something weirder, sadder, and strangely poetic? “Patriot” might be your next favorite.

What other platforms have spy TV shows?

Prime Video might be the top dog when it comes to spy shows, but it’s definitely not the only game in town. Apple TV+ has been stacking its spy lineup with some bold swings lately. “Prime Target” is their latest, and while it’s pretty new, it’s already pulling viewers into a high-stakes chase involving a math genius, a government secret, and one very persistent NSA agent.
Then there’s “Dark Matter,” which adds a multiverse twist to the whole espionage game. It’s more sci-fi on the surface, but don’t be fooled — the core of the story is all about covert ops, manipulation, and a race against a powerful shadow organization. Apple TV is leaning into the genre with a smart, modern edge, and it’s working.
You’ll also find some heavy hitters outside of Apple. Max gets in on the action with “The Sympathizer,” a sharp, politically charged miniseries that blends Cold War espionage with a deep personal identity crisis. Over on Netflix, “Black Doves” is a moody London-based thriller packed with secrets, assassins, and heartbreak during the holidays.
And if you’re looking for a slick, classic-style spy chase, “The Day of the Jackal” on Peacock hits that sweet spot between high-stakes international intrigue and tight, character-driven drama. Finally, don’t sleep on “The Agency” on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, which delivers globe-hopping CIA tension with a cast that includes Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere. So yeah — if you’ve already burned through Prime Video’s best, you’ve still got plenty of spy thrillers waiting to be uncovered.
