Does ‘GMM’ on Netflix make YouTube obselete?
Does ‘GMM’ on Netflix make YouTube obselete?
For me, the answer might just be yes, as I loved watching Rhett and Link on Netflix all week.
While I don’t spend a ton of time on YouTube, there are some things that will bring me back to the platform almost every day — if only briefly. “Good Mythical Morning” is one of the main draws of YouTube for me; I started watching the show during my last retail job in order to make it through the day, and it quickly became a favorite.
On Monday, Sept. 7, “Good Mythical Morning” joined the growing list of former YouTube-exclusive shows that are now also available to stream on Netflix. A creature of habit, I was initially resistant to the idea of switching to Netflix to get my daily dose of Rhett and Link, but after overcoming that inertia, “GMM” on Netflix became my favorite stream of the week.
“Good Mythical Morning” primarily stars Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal in a daily variety show that sees the pair of childhood friends try wacky food combinations, compete against each other in goofy competitions, and perform generally entertaining activities that help get the day started on the right foot.
I was drawn to “GMM” initially because it reminded me of my own childhood best friend, with whom I attempted to create my own internet variety show in 2008. Thankfully, all recordings of the show have been lost to time, but I sometimes like to think of us as the first Rhett and Link, only with much less talent, far fewer resources, and poorer follow-through.
Watching the series each day is what really drew me to YouTube, where I found other properties in the Mythical universe like Josh Scherer’s incredible “Last Meals” series. But I never really dove too deeply into YouTube otherwise; the YouTube algorithm’s propensity to recommend doom-scrolling topics to me is easily my least-favorite aspect of the platform.
So what did I love about watching “GMM” on Netflix this week? For one thing, the lack of ads; I’m a Netflix Premium subscriber, and watching the show on the streamer allowed me to stream it ad-free for the first time. Any ad reads by Rhett and Link during the show itself are still included, but those are easy to fast-forward through. Of course, “GMM” is available ad-free with YouTube Premium, but as an infrequent user of that platform, I never felt the need to upgrade to Premium.
Being able to hop from “GMM” to another stream to have on in the background of my workday with no switching is also a big plus for me. I can just put on an episode of “Arrested Development” or another favorite on Netflix and not have to think about what I’ll be half-listening to for the day.
Netflix’s efforts to become more like YouTube may not be winning over audiences in droves, but the service will be more than happy to chip away at YouTube’s loyal viewer base for now. The addition of “Good Mythical Morning” to Netflix could drastically reduce my admittedly light YouTube use, and I loved streaming the show on the platform all week.
