The best movie you haven’t seen is a sheep murder mystery

The best movie you haven’t seen is a sheep murder mystery

Talking sheep, Hugh Jackman, and an actual murder mystery somehow add up to one of the year’s sweetest surprises.

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.
"The Sheep Detectives" is the best underrated comedy movie on Prime Video right now.

Tara and I went into “The Sheep Detectives” pretty skeptical. We’re not usually into live-action and CGI mashups, and the last one I can remember watching was probably “Space Jam” back in the day. But the reviews were so good that we had to give this one a shot. And yeah, everybody was right.

It’s funny, emotional, sweet, and way more clever than a movie about crime-solving sheep has any business being. The performances are great, the mystery kept both of us guessing, and the whole weird thing somehow works. So if you haven’t tried it yet, here’s why “The Sheep Detectives” is the best under-the-radar comedy movie on Prime Video right now.

Best under-the-radar comedy movie on Prime Video

Why ‘The Sheep Detectives’ is the most underrated comedy movie on Prime Video

To be clear, Prime Video isn’t exactly hiding “The Sheep Detectives.” It’s been hanging around the streamer’s movie rankings, so people are definitely finding it. But the movie’s title and talking-sheep premise make it sound like something made only for little kids, and that’s really not what this is. It had a decent theatrical run, but it never became the huge hit you’d expect from something with these reviews and this cast. Now that it’s streaming, it feels like people are finally realizing how good it is.

The setup for “The Sheep Detectives” sounds completely ridiculous, which is honestly part of the fun. Hugh Jackman plays George Hardy, a shepherd who reads murder mysteries to his flock every night without realizing they understand every word. When George turns up dead, the local police officer is clearly in over his head, so the sheep decide they’ll have to solve the case themselves. They use everything they’ve learned from George’s books, but they quickly discover that real people are a lot messier than fictional suspects.

The mystery is a huge reason this works. Tara and I kept guessing the entire time, and neither of us got it right. The movie gives you plenty of suspects and clues without making the story confusing, so it’s easy to play along while the sheep stumble through their investigation. But here’s the thing: this isn’t only a whodunit. It’s also about grief, memory, and what happens when you can’t ignore something painful anymore. That sounds heavy for a talking-sheep comedy, but the movie handles it without becoming depressing or losing its sense of humor.

The performances are great across the board. Hugh Jackman doesn’t have to spend much time on screen to make you understand why the flock loves George so much. Nicholas Braun is really funny as the overwhelmed police officer, and Emma Thompson makes the most of every scene she gets. The voice cast is just as good, especially Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris O’Dowd, and Bryan Cranston. The CGI sheep also look much better than Tara and I expected, and after a few minutes, we stopped thinking about the effects and just started treating them like characters.

The movie isn’t perfect. The humor is pretty gentle, some of the human material isn’t as fun as the sheep stuff, and the live-action and CGI combination may take a minute to get used to. But Tara and I really didn’t care because “The Sheep Detectives” is just such a good time. It’s rare to find a family comedy that feels this original, gives adults a real mystery to follow, and isn’t afraid to get emotional. They took an idea that could’ve gone very wrong, committed to it completely, and somehow pulled off one of the sweetest surprises on Prime Video.

The Sheep Detectives

April 30, 2026

George Hardy is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.

What is ‘The Sheep Detectives’ about?

“The Sheep Detectives” follows George Hardy, a shepherd who spends his evenings reading murder mysteries to his flock. George assumes the sheep only enjoy hearing his voice, but they actually understand the stories and argue about the clues when he’s gone. After George is found dead, the sheep use everything he taught them to investigate the people in the nearby village. They’ll need to leave their safe meadow, face a world they barely understand, and somehow help a struggling police officer catch the killer.

Other underappreciated comedy movies on Prime Video

If you have fun with “The Sheep Detectives” and want more overlooked comedies on Prime Video, try these next. “Heads of State” pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as rival world leaders who have to stop fighting long enough to survive a global conspiracy. “Playdate” throws Kevin James and Alan Ritchson into what’s supposed to be a normal afternoon with their sons until a team of mercenaries shows up. And “Deep Cover” follows an improv teacher and two students who pretend to be criminals for the police, only to get pulled way too far into London’s underworld. They’re all different, but each one is a fun comedy with a premise that gets weird fast.
