Can you add new profiles to an Apple TV+ account?
As it turns out, Apple TV+ doesn’t use profiles in the traditional sense.
To say that Apple TV+ does things a little differently is to understate the obvious. The service doesn’t yet offer an ad-supported tier, making it the only streamer on the American market not to embrace commercials so far. It also doesn’t keep a library of licensed titles available on a regular basis; while it does import them from time to time, Apple TV+ usually just falls back on its catalog of originals and doesn’t offer customers many other alternatives.
There’s another way Apple TV+ differs from its peers: the lack of a traditional profile feature. Is that option just buried deep in the Apple TV+ settings menu, or does it not exist at all? We’ll explain more about profiles on Apple TV+ here.
Everything you need to know about profiles on Apple TV+
Can you create profiles on Apple TV+?
No, not in the sense that most streaming services do. Many streamers allow customers to create multiple profiles, so that viewers in the same household can watch a subscription and keep their watch histories and personalized viewing recommendations compartmentalized from the rest of the group.
Apple TV+ does not come with any such feature, unfortunately. Dig as you might, you won’t find the ability to create a profile anywhere in the settings menu. It’s not found on Apple TV+ at all, and if you don’t own an Apple device, you won’t be able to use the Family Sharing feature that allows you to replicate some of the features that you normally find on profiles.
What is Family Sharing on Apple devices?
Family Sharing allows customers with Apple devices and subscriptions to share apps. Up to six family members can be included in a family to share with, and setting it up will allow viewers to control their Apple TV+ viewing experience in a way similar to the customization that profiles offer on normal streamers — though everyone in the family will need to create their own Apple IDs. It’s important to note, however, that Family Sharing is different than having multiple user profiles on an Apple TV streaming player.
To set up a Family Sharing group on an iPhone, open the Settings app on your Apple device and type in your name. Tap Family, then Continue. Follow the onscreen instructions to establish your family group and invite other members. Find more instructions here, and remember, you won’t be able to use this feature in any way on non-Apple devices.
Apple TV
Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
