How do password sharing rules work on Netflix?

How do password sharing rules work on Netflix?

Netflix has strict rules about sharing passwords.

We’ve come a long way since 2017, when Netflix explicitly approved for its customers to share passwords by tweeting, “Love is sharing a password.” In 2023, the streamer became one of the first streaming services to begin enforcing password-sharing provisions in its terms of service.

But what’s the real deal with sharing a login on Netflix? How much trouble do you really get in if you do it, and what are your options for sharing legally with the service? We’ve got all the details you need to know.

Everything you need to know about password sharing on Netflix

Can you share a password on Netflix?

No. Netflix makes it very clear that you are only to share your Netflix account with the people living in your household, the people who physically occupy the same living space with you. The streamer defines a Netflix household as “a collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix.”

You set your Netflix Household using a connected TV device, and all the other devices using the same internet connection will be part of that household automatically.

What happens if you share your password on Netflix?

Netflix will use your IP address and other geo-locating details to determine whether or not you are in the same home as the Netflix account holder. If someone outside your home uses Netflix, they will see a message saying they do not live in the account holder’s home, and will be locked out of using the service.

Do Netflix password restrictions allow you to travel?

Yes, but you will have to reset your Netflix household if you attempt to use it too many times. Netflix will send you a one-time code to the email address associated with your account to let you stream outside your normal household if you want to watch the streamer away from home.

To keep customers from sharing passwords by using the travel login feature, however, Netflix will detect if someone outside your house uses your Netflix from the same location too many times. If this happens, Netflix will force you to change your household to the new location, and you will have to change it back to re-establish Netflix in your own home.

Can you update your Netflix Household?

Yes, you can set up a new Netflix Household from the streamer’s connected TV app. Go to the menu, select Get Help, then click Manage Netflix Household.

Click Update Netflix Household, then choose Send Email to get a verification link. Enter the temporary access code you get onto your TV screen, and you’ll be ready to go. You’ll want to use a TV and a device connected to the same internet to set up a Netflix Household.

Can you add an extra member to a Netflix account?

If you want to allow someone outside your home to watch your Netflix account, you can pay extra to let them do so and continue using your login credentials as the account owner. Extra members will have their own account, password, and profile, but the original Netflix subscriber will be on the hook for the bill.

Extra members have to be in the same country as the original account owner. The Netflix Standard with Ads plan allows you to add one extra member for $7 per month, bringing the total cost to $15 overall.

Adding an extra member to a Netflix Standard (ad-free) subscription costs $9 per month. Extra members may watch only on one device at a time, and download limits will correspond with the paid subscription the account owner has.
