Canelo vs. Crawford attracted over 41 million viewers to Netflix
The fight didn’t quite pull the audience of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, but its global audience was impressive nevertheless.
Saturday night, boxing fans around the world tuned into Netflix to see the long-dreamed-of matchup between Terence Crawford and Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. The fight didn’t disappoint; after lasting 12 rounds, Crawford was awarded the unanimous decision and walked away with the undisputed Super Middleweight Championship title. Crawford’s triumph is at risk of being overshadowed by Netflix’s, however, the streamer has revealed its audience figures for the fight, and the total climbs to over 41 million.
Key Details:
- Live and next-day: The Live+1 audience for the fight is estimated 41.4 million viewers, with 36.6 million live plus same day.
- NFL numbers: In the United States, the average minute audience for the fight approached NFL playoff game levels.
- Global, too: The fight was No. 1 on Netflix in 30 countries, and made the Top 10 in 91 territories.
The numbers released by Netflix paint a rosy picture indeed. They show that the Canelo-Crawford fight piled up to an average minute audience total of 41.4 million viewers in the Live+1 window, meaning live viewers and any streams of the fight in the 24 hours after it first streamed.
That includes an AMA of 36.6 million live plus same-day viewers from opening to closing bell, as measured by VideoAmp and Netflix. In the United States, an estimated AMA of 20.3 million viewers watched the fight live+SD — numbers that rival ratings for NFL playoff games.
The fight peaked at 24 million concurrent streams, and was the No. 1 viewing attraction on Netflix in 30 countries around the world, including the U.S., Mexico, U.K., Argentina, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the Philippines. It climbed into the Netflix Top 10 in 91 countries across the globe.
The figures are undoubtedly impressive, though the fight still lingers in the shadow of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson bout in November 2024, ratings-wise. That fight drew 108 million total viewers, more than doubling Canelo vs. Crawford — which was still the most-viewed men’s championship boxing match of the past 25 years.
Netflix has more marquee sporting events coming up soon, including a doubleheader of NFL games on Christmas Day. The streamer has its eyes open for more opportunities, so there could be plenty more to stream on the service in the future.
