DIRECTV, Scripps forge new retransmission deal
DIRECTV, Scripps forge new retransmission deal
The agreement allows Scripps-owned channels to be shown on DIRECTV once again.
It’s been over a month since the E.W. Scripps Company pulled 54 affiliates of ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC from DIRECTV thanks to a retransmission dispute between the two sides, leaving subscribers to the satellite and live TV streaming service without access to local news and national sports and programming. While Scripps was seeking higher retransmission fees, DIRECTV was reluctant to up the price that it paid to provide those channels, lest it have to pass those costs on to customers. However, the impasse has now been broken, as DIRECTV and Scripps have announced a new retransmission agreement.
Key Details:
- Coming back: DIRECTV has a new retransmission agreement with Scripps.
- No small feat: The deal allows more than 50 local broadcast affiliates to return to DIRECTV airwaves.
- Change it up: DIRECTV executive Rob Thun is arguing for a more modern local television distribution system to avoid future blackouts.

The terms of the new deal between DIRECTV and Scripps have not been disclosed, as is standard in these types of agreements. However, it’s most likely that DIRECTV is paying at least a little more to rebroadcast Scripps-owned channels. Now, viewers will have to keep a close eye on DIRECTV to see if it, in turn, raises its subscription costs to cover the increase.
A total of 54 affiliates of ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC owned by Scripps were pulled from DIRECTV as part of the dispute. Without this programming, DIRECTV viewers could not watch the local news, top sports, and other programming found on these channels. The affected channels included:

DIRECTV’s chief content officer, Rob Thun, hailed the new agreement as a win for viewers who would see their local programming restored. But in his statement following the announced end of the blackout, he emphasized the need for distributors and programmers to do whatever they can to avoid such blackouts in the future.
“Consumers should never lose access to essential local television because of a carriage dispute,” Thun said. “It’s time to modernize the system so it rewards service to local communities—and not consolidated market power—by returning to the original purpose of broadcasting: putting viewers’ interests first.”
