How to turn on subtitles on DIRECTV
DIRECTV’s subtitles are easy to use no matter what device you’re using. Using a DIRECTV remote, simply follow these instructions:
- In the Video Player, on LIVE TV, PAUSE the program.
- Use the DOWN arrow key to select the CC/Audio option.
- Press OK.
- Press the RIGHT ARROW to the Closed Captioning section.
- Press the DOWN ARROW to select from Off to the language preset.
- Select the EXIT button.
- Press the PLAY button to resume LIVE TV.
On a Gemini device, follow this process:
- Press Home on the Gemini remote.
- Go to Settings > Systems > and Device Preferences.
- Choose Accessibility.
- Select Captioning and then Display to turn on or off.
While using the DIRECTV app:
- Select Settings and then Preferences.
- Choose Captioning.
- Turn captioning on or off.
While watching DIRECTV on the web:
- Sign in to DIRECTV > Watch Now.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to Captioning and select Edit.
- Choose your language and view options.
- Select Save Changes.
What subtitle language options does DIRECTV offer?
During my user test of MyFree DIRECTV, I found that the service only offered English subtitles for its on-demand content. That was consistent across the five titles I examined for the purposes of this article.

Can you adjust subtitle appearance on DIRECTV?
I didn’t see any way to adjust subtitle font or caption appearances on MyFree DIRECTV. The ability to change the appearance of captions themselves is usually reserved for paid services, so this did not come as a great surprise.
Once again, we reached out to DIRECTV to see if viewers could adjust their subtitle and caption appearance on DIRECTV paid plans. This article will be updated accordingly when we get a response.
