DISH sheds 241,000 pay-TV customers in Q2
The company said that court-directed bankruptcy proceedings initiated earlier this year will have no impact on Sling TV in its earnings report.
Analysts have been eagerly awaiting EchoStar’s earnings results for the second quarter of 2026. EchoStar’s pay-TV subsidiary DISH has filed for bankruptcy, and that makes each earnings report the company now issues worth combing through for new details. EchoStar has revealed that during the second quarter, there was another exodus of pay-TV subscribers from the company’s services.
Key Details:
- Continued losses: DISH shed 241,000 pay-TV subscribers in the second quarter.
- Small decrease: Sling TV lost fewer than 100,000 customers in the quarter.
- No impact: EchoStar says that DISH bankruptcy proceedings won’t have any lasting effects on Sling TV.
DISH ended the second quarter of 2026 with approximately 241,000 fewer pay-TV customers than it started with. It now has 6.39 million total subscribers, including 4.68 million DISH TV customers and another 1.71 million Sling TV viewers.
The latter figure means that Sling lost 80,000 customers in the quarter, but that number figures to tick up during the third quarter when football season begins again. Despite these losses, EchoStar was able to post a net income of $8.46 billion. However, the vast majority of that figure is due to a one-time, non-cash gain. Pay-TV revenue at EchoStar fell to $2.24 billion, as compared to $2.46 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Unfortunately for EchoStar, another of the company’s segments is filing for Chapter 11 protection. The Satellite internet division, Hughes Network Systems, will be the next to file for bankruptcy, following the lead of DISH.
The company says that Hughes’ bankruptcy proceedings will have no impact on DISH, Sling TV, or the rest of EchoStar. So, unless things take a dramatic turn for DISH in bankruptcy court, Sling customers should be able to rest a little easier knowing that there’s no big changes coming to the service.
Sling launched a new channel package in the second quarter called the Essentials plan. First debuting in April, Sling Essentials allows subscribers to watch ESPN, Disney Channel, and a handful of other channels for $20 per month. Unfortunately, EchoStar did not provide specific guidance on the plan’s performance in Q2.
