Disney strikes new licensing deal with Netflix
The latest collaboration between the two giants includes ‘Percy Jackson,’ the ‘Ice Age’ series, and more.
Disney has a well-oiled streaming operation of its own, with Disney+ and Hulu both able to turn a profit consistently. But that success doesn’t mean that the company has any desire to shut itself off to other opportunities to bring eyes to its content (and money to its coffers). To that end, it has a new licensing deal with Netflix to allow the world’s largest streamer to distribute some big-name TV shows and movies for the first time in a number of years.
Key Details:
- Let’s share: Disney has licensed a new batch of titles to Netflix.
- Shrewd move: The titles include “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which will soon release its third season on Disney+.
- Animation, too: Beginning in 2027, a selection of Disney animated films will stream on Netflix, too.
As first reported by Variety, Disney has struck a new licensing deal with Netflix that will bring some marquee titles to the streamer in the coming months. One of the titles headed to Netflix is the first two seasons of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which are streaming on Netflix now.
With Season 3 of “Percy Jackson” coming exclusively to Disney+ on Nov. 20, the move is a pretty transparent effort by Disney to drum up more interest in the already popular series. In the same vein, Disney has sent the “Ice Age” movies to Netflix ahead of the release of “Ice Age: Boiling Point” in 2027.
The deal also includes several animated non-franchised Disney movies, such as “Elio,” “Raya and the Last Dragon, and the Oscar-winning “Soul.” These films will arrive on Netflix in early 2027 and will be available to stream on Netflix globally.
A mix of library titles will also shift to Netflix as part of the agreement, including “Felicity,” “Revenge,” “Army Wives,” and “Fresh Off the Boat.” The deal allows Disney to gain more visibility for its content, with the upshot of potentially luring more customers to its own streamers.
Disney and Netflix have collaborated several times in the past; Disney licensed a wide selection of titles to Netflix in 2023, and a slew of those shows and movies were removed from the streamer over the last year thanks to the expiration of another agreement. Now, Disney and Netflix have a new pact in place, bringing even more popular titles to Netflix’s massive library.
