But what’s the real story with ads on Prime Video? How much does it cost to go ad-free, and how bad is the streamer’s ad experience? Does Prime Video come with ads?

Yes, a basic Prime Video subscription comes with ads during playback. This is true whether viewers subscribe to the service’s standalone plan for $9 per month, or whether they receive Prime Video as a benefit of the larger Prime subscription.

If you rent or purchase a movie or TV show on Prime Video to stream on demand, you will not see ads with this content.

How much does ad-free Prime Video cost?

If you want to upgrade to ad-free Prime Video, called Prime Video Ultra, it’ll cost you an extra $5 per month. The add-on charge is the same whether you get Prime Video on its own or as part of the Prime subscription package. You can purchase the Prime Video Ultra upgrade with the service’s annual plans as well for $46 per year.

How to upgrade to ad-free Prime Video

  • Open your Prime Video account on a browser.
  • Locate the Go Ad Free button (typically in the top-right corner).
  • Confirm your account details.
  • Click Start Subscription.

What’s the ad experience on Prime Video like?

When we tested Prime Video's ad experience last year, the streamer played around three to five minutes of ads per hour of content — a fairly middle-of-the-road number. The service’s ad experience isn’t the worst, but it also has one of the cheaper ad-free plans at $14 per month.
