Netflix announced plans to reboot ‘Little House on the Prairie’
Netflix announced plans to reboot ‘Little House on the Prairie’
The book series about growing up in the American West was first turned into an enduringly popular TV show in the 1970s.
Netflix recently released an incredibly brutal look at life in the American West of the 19th century in “American Primeval.” The streamer is returning to a similar setting and timeframe, with its new series, though the content will almost certainly be less violent and adult in nature. Netflix announced on Wednesday that it was rebooting “Little House on the Prairie,” the 1974 TV show based on the book series of the same name by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We don’t know much about it yet, but we’ll lay out all the details we do have below!
Everything we know so far about “Little House on the Prairie” reboot
When will the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ reboot be released?
Netflix’s announcement that it was adapting the “Little House” books into a new series did not come with a release date. Considering the show probably hasn’t even started pre-production, however, viewers shouldn’t expect to see it until the second half of 2026, at the earliest.
Will the new ‘Little House’ series be on linear TV?
Viewers likely have plenty of memories of watching “Little House on the Prairie” on cable TV over the years. However, the new reboot will be a Netflix exclusive, and thus won’t see any episodes air on linear TV channels, barring a major change.
Where can you watch the old ‘Little House’ series?
The “Little House on the Prairie” series from 1974 ran for nine seasons, all of which are now available to stream on Peacock. You can watch that streamer with ads for $8 per month or $80 per year, or upgrade to ad-free streaming for $14 per month/$140 annually.
Which books will be adapted for the “Little House on the Prairie” reboot?
The first season of “Little House on the Prairie” will adapt the book of the same name, and will see Charles, Caroline, and their daughters Laura and Mary Ingalls move from the woods of Wisconsin to Independence, KS. That likely means that much of the content from “Little House in the Big Woods” and “Farmer Boy” will be skipped, adapted in other seasons of the show, or will be a reduced part of Season 1.
Who is the production team behind “Little House on the Prairie” on Netflix?
Rebecca Sonnenshine will serve as showrunner for the reboot, and Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel, and Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions will serve as executive producers.
“I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old,” Sonnenshine said. “They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”
Who will star in ‘Little House on the Prairie’?
There is no cast list for “Little House on the Prairie” available at the moment, as the show was just announced this week. The Streamable will update this article once cast members have been announced.
