Lena Dunham is back with ‘Good Sex,’ a star-studded rom-com movie
Natalie Portman stars as a couples’ therapist reentering the dating scene at 40.
“Too Much” just dropped all 10 episodes on Thursday, July 10, but there’s more Lena Dunham on the way with her upcoming Netflix rom-com “Good Sex.” Rom-coms are my favorite genre, so I’m definitely planning to watch all of it — once I get my ducks in a row. Dunham is back in New York (where it all started with “Girls”) and this new film stars Natalie Portman as a couples’ therapist reentering the dating scene after a failed long-term relationship. With a cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Rashida Jones, and Meg Ryan, “Good Sex” already feels like a must-watch. Here’s everything you need to know about “Good Sex” before it premieres on Netflix.
Everything you need to know about ‘Good Sex’:
When does the movie ‘Good Sex’ come on Netflix?
“Good Sex” doesn’t have an official release date yet, but production is already underway in New York City. It’s part of Lena Dunham’s multi-project deal with Netflix, following the July 10 premiere of her rom-com series “Too Much.” We’ll let you know as soon as Netflix announces when “Good Sex” will drop on the platform.
Will you be able to watch ‘Good Sex’ for free?
No, unfortunately, you can’t. Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial, so you’ll need a paid subscription to stream “Good Sex” when it arrives. The good news is that the cheapest plan is just $8 per month with ads. If you want to skip the commercials and download episodes to watch offline, the Standard plan runs $18 per month. There’s also a Premium option for $25 per month if you want to stream in 4K on up to four devices.

What is ‘Good Sex’ about?
“Good Sex” is a romantic comedy that follows Ally, a no-nonsense couples’ therapist played by Natalie Portman, who suddenly finds herself single and turning 40. After a decade in a relationship that didn’t work out, she’s reluctantly wading back into the New York dating scene — and let’s just say it’s a little more chaotic than she expected. She ends up caught between two very different men: one in his twenties and one in his fifties, each offering their own version of what intimacy, connection, and, yep, good sex can look like.
The movie doesn’t just play the usual rom-com beats, though. It will dig into how complicated and unpredictable dating can be, especially when you’re starting over later in life. Lena Dunham writes and directs, bringing her signature mix of messy honesty and humor, with a stacked cast that also includes Mark Ruffalo, Rashida Jones, Meg Ryan, and Tramell Tillman. If you’ve ever tried to figure out modern love while juggling expectations, past baggage, and new possibilities, “Good Sex” will probably hit close to home, but in a funny, refreshingly real way that put Dunham on the map with “Girls.”
Who stars in ‘Good Sex’?
Natalie Portman leads the cast of “Good Sex” as Ally, a couples’ therapist trying to get her life — and love life — back on track after a long-term relationship ends. It’s her first time back in the dating world in years, and she’s suddenly juggling two new love interests: one much younger, one much older. Mark Ruffalo and Tucker Pillsbury (aka musician Role Model) play the two men who shake up her expectations about sex, relationships, and what she really wants at this stage of her life.
The supporting cast is stacked, too. Rashida Jones and Meg Ryan are both on board, along with Tramell Tillman, best known for his role in “Severance.” Pillsbury makes his screen debut here, so fans of his music will be seeing a whole new side of him. Lena Dunham is writing and directing, while producing alongside Portman.
Is ‘Good Sex’ based on a true story?
Nope, “Good Sex” is a work of fiction. It’s an original story written and directed by Lena Dunham, not based on real events or people. While it definitely taps into some real-life themes about modern relationships, intimacy, and identity, the story and characters are entirely made up. So no need to fact-check the plot — just sit back and enjoy the ride.
