Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson team up in ‘The Pickup’ this August
The Prime Video buddy comedy follows two armored truck drivers caught in a wild casino heist.
I’ve been loving Prime Video’s recent run of action-comedies — “Deep Cover” was one of my favorites this year — so I’ve got high hopes for their next big one, “The Pickup.” Eddie Murphy teams up with Pete Davidson and Keke Palmer (check out “One of Them Days” — she’s so good) for what looks like a wild ride, packed with hijackings, explosions, and plenty of banter. Directed by Tim Story, it’s exactly the kind of chaotic summer movie Prime Video has been leaning into lately. Here’s everything you need to know about “The Pickup” before it premieres Wednesday, Aug. 6 on Prime Video.
Everything you need to know about ‘The Pickup’:
When does the movie ‘The Pickup’ come on Prime Video?
“The Pickup” is set to premiere Wednesday, Aug. 6 on Prime Video. The action-comedy will be available to stream exclusively for all Amazon Prime members, so you won’t have to wait for a theatrical run or any other platform. If you’re already subscribed, it’ll drop right into your Prime Video library on release day — perfect for a summer movie night.
Will you be able to watch ‘The Pickup’ for free?
Yes, you can — if you’re a new subscriber. Prime Video offers a 30-day free trial, which is plenty of time to stream “The Pickup” since it’s a movie you can watch in one evening. After the trial, plans start at $9 per month for the ad-supported option or $12 per month for the ad-free plan. Honestly, though, my wife and I just get Prime Video through our Amazon Prime membership, and for us, this setup is a no-brainer.

What is ‘The Pickup’ about?
“The Pickup” is an action-comedy that throws two armored truck drivers — Russell (Eddie Murphy) and Travis (Pete Davidson) — into the worst workday imaginable. What starts as a routine cash run turns into total chaos when they’re ambushed by a crew of sharp, dangerous criminals led by Zoe (Keke Palmer), a mastermind with a plan that goes way beyond stealing a few bags of money. The mismatched pair has to survive a hijacking, dodge bullets, and figure out how to work together… even though they can barely stand each other.
This doesn’t seem like just a simple heist story, though. The movie leans into big, over-the-top set pieces, quick banter, and the kind of wild energy you’d expect from Murphy and Davidson sharing the screen. Zoe’s bigger plan involves a high-stakes casino job, which drags the two drivers deeper into the mess, forcing them to decide whether they’re victims or partners in the crime. I love a good buddy comedy, and I can’t wait for this one.
Who stars in ‘The Pickup’?
Eddie Murphy leads the cast of “The Pickup” as Russell, a veteran armored truck driver who finds himself way out of his comfort zone when a simple cash run turns into a high-stakes heist. Pete Davidson plays Travis, his younger, less experienced partner whose sarcastic humor doesn’t exactly help when bullets start flying. Keke Palmer steps in as Zoe, the sharp and ambitious criminal mastermind running the whole operation. The cast also includes Eva Longoria, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Jack Kesy, Andrew Dice Clay, Marshawn Lynch, and WWE star Roman Reigns, rounding out a mix of comedy, action, and big personalities.
Who are the creators behind ‘The Pickup?’
“The Pickup” is directed by Tim Story, the guy who gave us the hilarious “Barbershop” and the over-the-top superhero fun of “Fantastic Four.” He’s great at mixing fast-paced action with real laughs, which makes him a perfect match for a wild heist comedy like this. With Murphy and Davidson in the lead, you can tell this one’s built to lean into ridiculous banter, crazy set pieces, and that anything-can-happen vibe Story does so well.
What other action-comedy movies can you watch on Prime Video?
And if you can’t wait for “The Pickup” to drop to get your action-comedy fix, there’s more to stream while you wait. “Heads of State” throws John Cena and Idris Elba together as bickering world leaders forced to survive behind enemy lines, “Deep Cover” follows a trio of improv misfits accidentally swept into a London crime ring, and “The Fall Guy” has Ryan Gosling pulling off wild stunts while chasing down a missing movie star.
