"We Were Liars" drops all eight episodes on Wednesday, June 18 on Prime Video.

I’m not usually a sucker for shows about rich, pretty teenagers… but throw in a private island, a mysterious accident, and a tight-knit group of friends called “the Liars,” and yeah, I’m in. From everything we’ve seen so far, “We Were Liars” checks all the boxes: old money, emotional trauma, and a mystery that slowly unravels over eight episodes. Based on the bestselling young adult novel by E. Lockhart, this Prime Video series looks like it’s aiming for that sweet spot between haunting and high drama. Here’s everything we know so far about “We Were Liars.”

Everything you need to know about ‘We Were Liars’:

When will episodes of ‘We Were Liars’ come on Prime Video?

All eight episodes of “We Were Liars” are set to drop on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video. The series has already wrapped production, and with first-look images out in the world, the countdown is officially on.

What is ‘We Were Liars’ about?

At its core, “We Were Liars” is about a girl named Cadence Sinclair Eastman and the very privileged, very picture-perfect world she comes from — at least on the surface. Every summer, Cadence and her extended family vacation on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts, where everything looks like it belongs on the cover of a lifestyle magazine. But this isn’t just a story about beach bonfires and family brunches. After a mysterious accident one summer, Cadence is left with a foggy memory and a lot of unanswered questions — about her past, her family, and even her closest friends, who call themselves “the Liars.”

The Liars — Cadence, Gat, Johnny, and Mirren — seem like the kind of tight-knit crew you’d expect in a glossy summer drama, but each of them is carrying their own secrets. Gat is the outsider, smart and thoughtful, and maybe the only one who sees through the Sinclair family’s perfectly curated image. Mirren’s the quiet observer with an artistic soul, and Johnny brings the reckless energy that makes you love him even when you know he’s probably the one pushing the boundaries. Together, they create this bubble of intensity, romance, and rebellion — until it all comes crashing down. Something happens. Something big. And Cadence is left to figure it out, two years later, piece by piece.

What makes the show so intriguing isn’t just the central mystery — it’s how much no one wants to talk about it. The Sinclair family is all about keeping up appearances, and Cadence’s search for the truth is met with vague answers and a whole lot of gaslighting. As she starts to remember what went down, the show dives deeper into themes of privilege, grief, guilt, and the lies we tell ourselves to keep things neat and pretty. It’s not just about what happened that summer — it’s about why no one will admit it. And with YA heavy-hitters Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie running the show (both of them with a stack of buzzy teen dramas under their belts) you can bet it’s going to be emotional, twisty, and packed with drama.

Who stars in the ‘We Were Liars’ TV series?

Esther McGregor steps in as Mirren, the quietly observant cousin, and Joseph Zada plays Johnny, the charming chaos agent of the group.

The adult side of the Sinclair family is stacked too — Mamie Gummer plays Carrie Sinclair, the oldest Sinclair daughter, while Caitlin FitzGerald plays Penny, who’s going through a messy divorce and breeds golden retrievers on the side. Rounding out the cast are David Morse as Harris Sinclair, the family’s patriarch, and Rahul Kohli as Ed, Carrie’s partner.

We Were Liars

June 18, 2025

One year after a mysterious accident left her with amnesia, 17-year-old Cadence returns to Beechwood, an island off Martha’s Vineyard, seeking answers. As three generations of the distinguished Sinclair family gather at their private summer utopia, no one will talk about the accident – neither her childhood friends “The Liars” nor her first love Gat, forcing her to uncover the truth herself.

Is ‘We Were Liars’ based on a book?

Yep — “We Were Liars” is based on the best-selling young adult novel by E. Lockhart. First published in 2014, the book became a massive hit thanks to its twisty plot, dreamy writing style, and that ending everyone was talking about. The new Prime Video series adapts the original story, following Cadence Sinclair and her close-knit group of friends — known as the Liars — through a summer that changes everything. E. Lockhart is actually an executive producer on the show, so fans can expect the series to stick closely to the heart of the novel, even as it expands a bit for TV.

Who are the creators behind ‘We Were Liars’?

“We Were Liars” is brought to life by two names that carry serious YA cred — Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie. Plec is the creator of “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals”, and “Legacies”, while MacKenzie created “Roswell, New Mexico.” If you’ve watched any of those, you know they’re both pros at mixing romance, secrets, and supernatural or emotional twists — perfect for the tone of “We Were Liars.”

Both are serving as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series, and they’ve teamed up with Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios to make it happen. The book’s author, E. Lockhart, is also on board as an executive producer, so the adaptation has her stamp of approval. This is the first time one of Lockhart’s novels has made it to screen, and with this creative team steering the show, it looks like they’re setting the tone for something both loyal to the book and expanded for TV.

Will there be a Season 2 of ‘We Were Liars’?

While “We Were Liars” is based on a standalone novel, there’s already talk about what could come next. In an interview, co-creator Julie Plec hinted that if the show gets picked up for a second season, it might dive into “Family of Liars” — E. Lockhart’s prequel novel that focuses on an earlier generation of Sinclairs. That story zeroes in on the mothers’ lives as teenagers, giving us a deeper look at how the family’s secrets started long before Cadence’s summer unraveling. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but it sounds like there’s definitely room to expand the world if Season 1 hits.
