The hype for “Stranger Things” has been building to critical mass this week, thanks to a good deal of help from Netflix. The streamer declared Nov. 6 “Stranger Things Day,” a celebration of the in-universe day that Will Byers first disappeared, setting off a chain of events that the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, may never recover from. Viewers are hotly anticipating the release of the show’s fifth season, and now Netflix has released the first five minutes of footage from the premiere.

Key Details:

  • Happy Thursday: Netflix released the first five minutes of “Stranger Things” Season 5 on Thursday.
  • Back in time: The footage shows a younger Will Byers facing danger in the Upside Down.
  • Getting Stranger: “Stranger Things” Season 5 isn’t the end of the show’s cinematic universe by a long shot.

Netflix uses the first five minutes of “Stranger Things” Season 5 to take viewers back in time. The footage shows a young Will in the Upside Down, running from a Demogorgon. Ultimately unable to escape, he is brought before Vecna, who says forebodingly that the two of them will do “beautiful things together.”

The footage helps serve as a reminder to audiences that Vecna has been a part of the “Stranger Things” story since the beginning, and ties Season 5 back to the roots of the show. Will has never been quite the same since his return from the Upside Down, and the footage gives viewers a better idea of why.

‘Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85’

There’s more “Stranger Things” content coming to Netflix once Season 5 of the show finally concludes on Dec. 31. Netflix announced on Thursday that a new animated series set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the show called “Stranger Things: Tales of ‘85” will be released following the fifth season finale.

Season 5 of “Stranger Things” will release its first part on Nov. 26, with the second batch of episodes due to arrive on Dec. 31. The series finale will be a feature-length episode and will arrive on Netflix and in a selection of movie theaters around the United States on the same day.
